I do it like the picture below with a double down stoke when ascending adjacent strings.

That's exactly how I'd play it too.  It's also how EJ would play it, with the economy picking so the entire lick is picked, but his picking is navigated so he changes strings after an upstroke.

You could try to power through, but if you persevere with the Economy you will benefit from it later. You can apply it to loads of other licks and get really fluid sounding rapid runs.

You need to have your pick angled towards the floor for this lick, that's what makes changing strings after upstrokes easier and that's also why EJ and Yngwie use economy picking - they are downward pick slanters.  If you angle your pick upwards, like John McLaughlin, you wont be able to change strings as quickly after upstrokes.

Has anyone ever transcribed/videoed an ascending version, or an extended lick with this approach? I've applied the concept to ascending, but it doesn't sound so 'EJ' as the descending one.

So basically, I could spend the time trying to work it out, or I could ask for someone who's already put in the hard effort to help a lazy git out. I mustered enough energy, (just), for option 2 :-)

This should help. The hard part is getting the turn-around into your memory. Take it slow and it'll come eventually. I've put lines in between the groups of five. Just continue this pattern up and end it how you like.

I always associate the descending 5s pentatonic licks with EJ and the ascending 5s pattern with Shawn Lane.

That's one of the advantages with Economy Picking... Almost any cool ideas you come up with for Downward Pick-slanting will work when completely reversed with Upward Pick-slanting.
