For the 250k pots in strats, go for a 120k resistor and a 1nF cap in parallel - this is best to control loss of treble in the range about 4 up to 10 on the knob (if its an audio taper pot). If you most often turn down below 5, you might prefer a smaller cap 0.68 of 0.82nF.

I got this info from a chap on another forum who had gone into it really scientifically, but I can confirm that it works like a charm in practice.

Nb. For humbucker guitars with 500k pots, use a 150k resistor instead.

  • Brilliant thanks .... new to modding.
Stock CS Strat 61RI...how do I know it's audio taper pot type? Cheers Jon

If it's the stock pot in your strat, it will be audio taper.

I just did my AVRI '62, I ended up with just a 330pf cap, the resistor changed the pot taper too much for me.

One thing I do on Strats though is to run a pair of flying leads from the volume pot into the jack socket cavity. That way you can experiment until you're totally happy (make sure it's well taped up so nothing can short against the jack plug/socket, obviously) then after a few gigs you can install your final choice of components directly onto the pot when you're changing strings.
