Chord Of The Week 24/12/16 - Gmaj7add9(no3rd)/D arpeggio from "2000 miles" by The Pretenders

I'm cheating a bit on the date, because tomorrow (Saturday) is Christmas Eve and I'll be a tad busy ;-)

For this year's Christmas special I give you a genius arpeggio from 2000 miles by The Pretenders where you hold down a D chord xx0232 in order to play a G chord! The G chord in the main progression lasts for one bar of 6/8, in two groups of three quavers.

First group of 3: A xxx2xx, G xxx0xx, D xx0xxx
Second group of 3: G xxx0xx, F# xxxxx2, G xxxxx3

Pretty hard to notate as one chord, but here's my best effort! -

Gmaj7add9(no3rd)/D: x x 0 2(0) x 2(3)

I've called the A note xxx2xx and add9 rather than a sus2 because it clearly resolves down to the root rather than up to the 3rd, and I've gone for the cumbersome maj7add9 suffix rather than the more streamlined maj9 because the maj7 and 9th extensions seem to me to be performing completely different functions in the chord. Feel free to argue otherwise!

You can hear the arpeggio at 0:08 in this video.
