Pete Cornish Pedals: The Verdict.

So loads of people recently have been umming and ahhing about PC pedals.

I, at the time of writing, have all of the PC dirts save for the P2 (which I don't like) and the NG3 (which is for doomers and people who want to demolish things).

I have, and this will surprise some, started a little video comparison but loops are all taken up so this takes some doing to get the right comparison.

I also want to be objective and fair and not a fanboi. So, here's the written version. I have divided them into 3- Muffs, OD's, Boost/EQ and what I have compared it to.

1. The P1.

Bit of an issue here- the only muff pedals I have other than this is my vintage rack RAT and the Fallout, which are lower gain so I won't do a direct comparison. So the P1, scooped, grainy, dirty, Ram's Head/Triangle sounding, is my fave muff ever. Wins.

2. G2 v Fallout and Rat.

G2 on its own is a bit meh for the pricetag. Best for classic rock lead sounds. The RAT is more strident and clear and even more detailed. The Fallout is much smother and creamier than either. RAT is the most gritty, Fallout is the warmest. But, stack G2 into a Tube Driver and it's a different pedal and very DG Live8. For me 1. RAT. 2. Fallout 3. G2. (if you stack it into the TD, then I'd think differently) EDIT: the RAT here is my rack version, which is very very good compared to the pedal v's.

3. SS3 v KoT v Tube Driver.

SS3 is basically a Dist + on steroids. It is incredibly versatile and if you needed one dirt for all, this would do it. Again, Classic Rock leads. My fave settings are lower gain. Again, it has a muffy sound to it. Against the KoT, the KoT has more detail but less thickness and warmth. The SS3 works better at low vols but the KoT cranked is a sound to behold. Lastly, the BKTD. Well call me a DG fanboi but this has a size od sound, warmth and detail that neither of the other 2 come close to.  So: 1. BKTD 2. KoT 3.SS3

4. CC1 v KoT v Peacekeeper

CC1 is sensational. But so is the Peacekeeper. I spent an hour and couldn't tell the difference between the two, although the PK has a tad more gain on tap on the upper limits of the gain pot. KoT, even with both channels on, is not as ooomphy and rounded as either at these lower gains. One downside of the CC1 is it can make the bass response on a Vibe go very booomy, don't know why. Think the solo for another brick and that's where these are. 1. CC1 and Peacekeeper 3. KoT

5. 3Q-1

I have nothing to compare this to, other than to say it's already my fave light OD boost pedal ever. It is fucking astonishing. It's like a Klon with a 3 band EQ

Give me a few days and I'll load some simple clips up.

One thing I will say- stacking anything into a low gain tube driver blows my mind!

I know we take the piss out of me and the PC thing, but I've tried to be objective....

It was very noticeable that every brand above (not the RAT) have the most usable pot range ever and people like Pete, Mike and Adrian should be commended for that.

What I will say is there's not one bad pedal above- every single one is world class.

  • Is the Rat a Muff pedal?

Presumably the verdicts are fairly amp and guitar related as well? I'm struggling at the moment to get a tone with my Muffroom, les Paul and Marshall that I can live with long term. I find no matter how I eq the pedal it has just so many mids. With single coils (tele that I rarely use to gig) it seems more balanced.
    Preusmably similar with these?

  • Great review, thanks!

You mention that the CC1/KOT/PK do the ABITW solo, which I'd 100% agree with, but I'm guessing that the 3Q-1 will do a good job of that too, no?

Sorry, all through the Hiwatt, all with 1960 strat.

Re Rat, I see it as a fuzz type of pedal.

    Interesting stuff.

For my over the top higher gain with a little fuzziness sounds I'm currently using a Jam Pedals Rattler which is essentially a vintage Rat clone, great pedal, although I've always been fascinated by the BK Tube Driver, at higher settings does this get to the gain levels of the Rat? Interesting that Rat is in with the muff etc. it def has some fuzz tendencies (why I like it) but also has a bit of mid push and a bit of OD flavour.

@dindude - a BKTD can get to Muff levels, no probs.

Cool I'm thinking of trying a Buffalo TD-X, no valve etc but seems to get close to the tube driver vibe whilst being easier to power and supposedly friendlier at lower volumes.

Right- here's the 3Q-1. Sorry for shitty recording and playing.

I hope you can hear how thick and lush it is.

    Changed it, sorry.

Jesus, I really can hear how 3D the Hiwatt sounds compared to the J40!
