Need some music recommendations!

What's Hot

Hi Folks

Off for a two week break on Thurs and want to get as much music 'offline' from Apple Music as I can before I head off as I don't know how reliable the inter webs will be out there!

So I'm looking for as many music recommendations as possible! Doesn't strictly have to be 'guitar heavy' music. Old, new, anything goes! Just shout out some stuff you like or think I might like based on my likes...

Some of my likes:

John Mayer, Gary Moore, Killers, Ed Sheeran, Mark Knopfler, Matchbox Twenty, Fratellis, Ryan Adams, Marillion, Joshua Radin, Damien Rice, Aerosmith

  • I don't really like any of those bands you mention but since a lot of it is kinda guitar-pop I'd highly recommend some Brendan Benson. Lapalco and Alternative to Love are two very good records by him.

  • I'm liking last year's Michael Kiwanuka album - Love & Hate. Imagine What's Going On made a baby with Dark Side Of The Moon

I'm also a big fan of White Denim, who are a little bit out-there compared to what's on your list, but if you like the idea of a band that sounds like the Allman Brothers playing Yes songs they're worth a listen. I'd pick or Corsicana Lemonade.

Somewhere near the Damien Rice / Ed Sheeran camp is John Martyn. Check out Solid Air for some fun times with acoustic guitar, wah wah and echoplex.

    Shuggie Otis, lovely holiday music.

  • Maybe Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst? Nick Drake if you don't mind something very down in the dumps (but beautiful). Maybe Tim Buckley. These are all based on your Ryan Adams taste really

Yes. Inspiration Information is well worth a listen. Dude was only 21 and played just about everything on it.
Nick Drake if you don't mind something very down in the dumps (but beautiful).

It's only really Pink Moon that I think sounds like that (and it would, considering Drake's parlous mental state at the time). Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter are gentle, subdued affairs  but much more positive (Hazey Jane II from Bryter Layter is distinctly upbeat). Such a sad story.

Incidentally, the title track from Solid Air was written for Nick Drake, who was a friend and label-mate of Martyn's.

I like to think I have quite an eclectic taste in music although I'm a punk at heart (an old one mind!). However, these two non-punks got my full attention last year; Thundercat and Syd Arthur:

My advice - get a Spotify account (do they still do a free trial of Premium?), load it up with a bunch of stuff you already like, and then dive into the "Discover Weekly" and "Release Radar" playlists.  They will throw up a TON of great stuff you've never heard of, but will probably love!  They have some very clever algorithms which will look at playlists other people have created, and it's almost like they manage to get inside your head to find out what you want to hear.

I have a routine where I start listening to Discover Weekly on Monday, and quite often the very first track will be something amazing from someone I've never heard of.  I'll then listen to most of their back catalogue for a couple of days, and then eventually I'll come back to Discover Weekly and will move on to the next track.  On a good week I might actually get to the end of the playlist, and have normally saved a load of great albums along the way.

I don't know if Apple Music has a similar feature, but personally I find Discover Weekly is worth the price of Spotify Premium on its own.  I'm getting turned on to more great new stuff now than at any point before in my life (despite hardly listening to the radio these days)

Some of the gear, some idea
