The Helix can only have 8 scenes (or whatever they're called in Helix parlance) in a patch.
But you can have expression control too. Snapshots aren't the only way of making sound changes, they're just a convenient way of making big sound changes.
You can hook up expression controllers to the Axe FX as well but at some point it becomes impractical and just easier to use a different scene or patch.
LOL...I'm guessing you didn't see Clarky's rig in Birmingham...four expression pedals, IIRC, mostly used for altering the whole signal path.

Just thinking about what was on the screen hurt my brain.
And I thought you guys were doing an expression pedal group test!!

Indeed - but if it's a case of squeezing that one last sound you need into one patch it might be worth it. I know that's getting very hypothetical!

You can set up other controllers too (ADSR/Envelope/Pitch/LFO)
Those are the things I'd like to see added to the Helix. Envelope controlled phaser!

Clarky's brain is special though. Most people can't and don't think like he does!
    Red ones are better.

I've seen his posts about it, IIRC he's big on morphing stuff.

It is cool for sure but I don't need it for the music I write

he was doing it back when units had 4 cursor keys and an 'ok' button, and doing it meant 1000 taps down 7 menu layers =)

Annoyingly, I took my PodHD500X -> cheap Harley Benton power amp setup to practice yesterday and it sounded really good! It's annoying because I had pretty much decided to upgrade to a more modern pedal but now find myself struggling to justify doing this  =)

I am finding myself more and more converted to modelling tech though...assigning various parameters to expression pedals and being able to throw in effects as required is just really, really cool.

Yep, agreed - however, @Drew_TNBD recently hit a limitation of the Helix in that he needed to run two songs into each other, which meant he needed more than 8 different sounds in a single patch to avoid patch gaps and lack of spillover. The Helix can only have 8 scenes (or whatever they're called in Helix parlance) in a patch.

Granted, that's a bit of an edge case, but still...it's a limitation you don't have if you can do seamless patch changes with spillover.
Why doesn't Drew just buy another Helix and A/B them for that segue?
    Simples.

Or, even better, run them each in each other's loops!

You could do some really weird stuff like that.

Yeah, but imagine interleaving the two by cross-patching all four loops...

No thanks - My head sometimes hurts with 1 helix, let alone 2..

but I am intrigued.... I wonder if @Digital_Igloo could persuade garbage to setup a couple of their helices that way... or maybe line 6 have tried it already?

Or put a Helix in the loop of every Helix. A Helix fractal!

Pretty much what I do with mine.  You don't have to use it all :)
