Question for Lazy J20 owners

What's Hot
hotpickupshotpickups Frets: 520
What do you use for dirt and solo boosts. Other than my Lazy J Deuce which is mostly brilliant with this amp (as it should be) I still find on some occasions that other dirt pedals lack something I want. It's probably the amp but mostly it just gets more compressed especially when I already have the Deuce on. Maybe I'm asking too much from my J20.

I'm not maxing out the amp by the way. Usually on around 3 max

Hmmm possibility. Koko boost with the two switches looks good too. Pricey :(

    Good though ;)
Their Dual Boost is excellent too.

For a cheaper option look for an MI Audio Boost n Buff.

I guess I'll be doing some youtubing tonight checkin those two out

If I like I might just have to sell my Warthog. It'll be tough to part with it though as it's a great pedal but maybe I'm not a distortion kind of guy. Albeit it can be used as an overdrive pedal too. What am I saying ...... I can't even think of selling that.......... yet ;)

I tend to have mine on a cleanish sound with a bit of breakup when you hit the strings hard.  I use an OCD as my drive for rhythm playing, and boost it with a slightly tweaked TS style pedal.

EP Boost for small lift and Prince of Tone (on overdrive setting) as main drive and sometimes both.
Works for me, can't vouch for anyone else.

I've just spent a few hours noodling away on my new J20 and swapped pedals around...RAH into Cruiser...sounds fantastic to me.

I find the Deuce is fine for me 90% of the time but sometimes I just need that mega push (to get me heard LOL). Koko looking promising but so expensive. Always something to buy it seems :(

I'll check that out too then. Just read the blurb quickly and I'm always dubious when manufacturers say they've captured the sound of some rock star of a by gone age. It's all in yer fingers you know LOL

Spent a long while looking to improve my Cruiser Deuce into Lazy J20 amp,
Finally settled on Way Huge Overrated Special after Cruiser Deuce (+ an MXR EP booster on 10 if feeling the need). As Miser Neil messaged me.....volume control helps but drive sounds are so subjective to people's ears!
My setup is also JB inspired - love the combination of Lazy J, Cruiser and Way Huge OS pedal.  Hope this helps. Jon

So the classic combo of a tweed amp and a tubescreamer then!

Ok so my amp isn't a Lazy J but I have an 18watt tweed so I have struggled with a similar thing.

A treble booster is the one for me, something like a Beano Boost.

I use an OCD for the most part but if I want to cut through and take a little bit of that bottom end away then the Beano just works.

You're right @JonHosker that does work well with a tweed overdriven amp. Now where to buy one as I don't think they make 'em anymore ?

EDIT: Oh yes they do. I've found some online ;)

  • Turn the amp up higher and use your guitar volume more?

Yes I did think of that one but not prepared to wait or pay those prices. I doubt it will be much different from what my Deuce can do though. I can feel the comments coming my way now that I've just said that LOL

Thinking of trying a RYRA KLONE.
    May consider selling the Overrated!??

I didn't mean it to sound so condescending sorry. What I meant was if you currently run the amp on 3 then boost it with the duece. Why not try running it on 5 and rather than turn the guitar down to 6 for cleans, 10 for rhythm use 3 for clean, 7 for rhythm and boost and wide open for a more saturated lead? Adding another pedal is surely going to add volume anyway isn't it?

I'll happily butt out if I'm missing the point :)

I absolutely love my cruiser, but I do find it quite fuzzy sounding. It's more of a booster to me than an overdrive. Doesn't really get those open/hollow sounding overdrive tones as much as another "transparent" overdrive. For a long time now, after trying a bunch of drives including Cornish and VL, I usually run either a Tim or Caroline haymaker as a transparent overdrive if my j20 is cleanish and then push that with the cruiser for more. What also works really well with the j20 is a fuzz face. Like my chase tone silver stardust. Sort of cruiser like but more compressed and a bit bigger, but not as defined :)

But seriously, I really think you only need two pedals: a cruiser into a more transparent drive.

I'm coming to that conclusion too. May the Way Huge could be the one :) I'm in  no rush so I can research to my hearts content :)

No problem. In fact if it was on 5 it would be way too loud for a rehearsal at least. Hence why I'm going for a master volume for my next amp :)

Ok it appears that every shop I know of have now sold out of the Way Huge Overrated. Any other suggestions that are very close to this pedal that I can check out. If it's silly money then forget it. I'm basically happy with my set up but would just like some tweaking if I can but don't want to spend a fortune on it. I think £200 was my absolute max and even then not really wanting to stump up that much

EDIT I'm starting to think that I really should've bought the @ThorpyFX Veteran when I had the chance. Just couldn't bring myself to buy it so near to/during Xmas. I think that ticked all my boxes there
