Hello.. Well there was a slightly bigger delay in getting on with this build than I thought was going to happen, you know how life just seems to get in the way sometimes..
Well anyway.. back to it.
So the inlays. I finished installing them... after its a good idea to fill the sides of the inlays just in case theres any small gaps.. and I do that with ebony dust and super glue
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0084_zpsbjuy9wy8.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0085_zpsdl31c0tm.jpg
All done
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0086_zpsf5p5zh9f.jpg
Once that had some time to dry I then go at it with my orbital sander
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0089_zpsf2qu5fxa.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0090_zpslfr4skmy.jpg
Then I cut it down to the correct size
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0093_zpsygfz5ldz.jpg
Now time for the trussrod... So I first mark it out so I know how far to route
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0095_zps6lliqro4.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0096_zpsen1up8qk.jpg
Heres the bit I use (quarter inch I think)
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0098_zpsrwu2nmww.jpg
Then the way I do this is clamp the wood in the vice and then clamp a straight edge (in this case a nice bit of wood) and I run the router along that edge
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0100_zpslhisyllu.jpg
The nut end is a bit wider than the rest of the rod so I chisel that out
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0101_zpsuroakqyg.jpg
And its in
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0103_zpsjnpixqrv.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0104_zpsctvw1pdm.jpg
And then for the truss rod tool hole.. I use an 8mm drill bit which gives me just the right size hole
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0107_zpsi4dgbwte.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0111_zpsg76hkrs2.jpg
Always check that all is well and it works (even though I know it will)
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0113_zpsjl2dws5e.jpg
Then its time for the fretboard to join the neck permanently.. I line up my centre lines
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0114_zpsn3ordptu.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0117_zpst6wxwzhx.jpg
And then get as many clamps on as possible
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0120_zpstdxdnpog.jpg
So I will let that dry tonight and continue tomorrow... I have also decided what pickups and bridge im using.. And its going to be a Gibson Burstbucker 2 in the bridge and a P94 in the neck with an adjustable wraparound tailpiece/bridge....
I also want to do a bit more practice on my carved tops before I ruin a really nice bit of wood but I may get up to that tomorrow if my next test goes well.
More very soon

Following with much interest.
How do you do the dust and glue fill at the inlays? Do you mix the two up and then fill, or put in the dust and add glue on top, or vice-versa?

Yes I too have watched many of his vids.. He certainly does some nice stuff and isn't afraid to try new things.. I got him to come and look at my guitars at the Kempton Park guitar show and told him as much... And he seemed to like what he saw (but he may have just been being nice )

You can make a paste filler by mixing up ebony dust and a small amount of decent epoxy, you do mix this together first. It tends to match the raw wood a little better

Thanks
Yeah no worries.. I got them off ebay seller Ian.. Lives in Rainham (which is conveniently close to me )

Again not too much done today.. (kind of annoyingly)... Part of that was the cold.. By the time I got started it really was too cold to concentrate properly (I work in a garage at the moment)..
But anyway.. I checked the neck out and all looks good.. Nice and tight.. I will use a bearing router bit and run it along the side of the fretboard to get the neck to size.

http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0085_zpsp67vhpaz.jpg
All the lines match up nicely.
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0086_zpsyvzp0kpy.jpg
So the next things are to get the neck to size and do the tennon and then get the body ready.....
Well a bit of a quick post but this build will speed up next week (as so far im more free to do it) so hopefully by the end of the week all the major wood work will be done.
Have a great weekend one and all and more on this soon.

Arrgg.. All going very slow.. Was way too cold most of this week to do any work... Plus ive had issues getting the pickups I wanted for this build (see Guitar Shop Rant thread) ive now decided to go with some Seymour Duncans.. A Phat Cat P94 type pickup and I will get some 57 type hummer for the bridge (probably also SD)..
So now knowing this (unless it changes again) this is my rough mock up for this project.. What do you reckon?

Hello and welcome back... Finally got back to it today and today was an important step for me.. I did the body carve...
Now I have only done this twice before and that was practicing... And the last time I did it I thought my results were so so... not something I would be proud of.. but not too bad either...
Since then I have been watching as many vids as I can with all the different methods people have of doing this... and have been thinking about it a lot..
So first thing was to do another test... (I got more photos of the test than the actual body im using for this build)
Heres a spare blank I have which is about the same thickness as the one im using for this build
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0093_zps5l4tnbrm.jpg
First thing to do is do a binding channel cos doing it after the carve would be much more difficult as the top will no longer be flat... I do this with a special router bit (called a rabbeting bit) which has a bottom bearing that follows the body
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0094_zpsb8wnv3a2.jpg
Sorted
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0096_zpsct1f2i6c.jpg
Then I use some binding and draw a line where the top of it is so I know how far to carve
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0098_zpswinghs2h.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0100_zps9yswsq2l.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0101_zpsl1zc51ke.jpg
Then draw a line around the body to let me know how deep to carve (this is just rough for the test)
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0102_zpsphd2ltm1.jpg
Here you can see I have gone around the edge leaving a bump in the middle (the black bits are where the plastic on my angle grinder disc burns on the wood, easily sands off)
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0104_zpswu4gkn9d.jpg
Then I go to my orbital sander and smooth everything off
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0105_zpsfuuqf6ch.jpg
And here we go.. not bad
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0106_zpsah2t0ffw.jpg
Here you can see the binding fits nicely
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0107_zps69bwlisj.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0110_zpsozn6tidy.jpg
So next is the real thing.. I will show that in the next post (cos this is long)

So here we go.......
I mark the top..
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0113_zpsswaea0pc.jpg
Binding channel
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0114_zpsnkft9gqu.jpg
Then I mark where im going to carve down too
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/bb8274ae-8554-4b3e-8bc4-6d72a56abffc_zpsyfp4eft5.jpg
And here we go... What do you reckon? Still needs some fine sanding mostly around the horn area
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0117_zpssg4hdvqy.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0118_zpsdbffhvel.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0120_zpsv2ido0lk.jpg
Next is to round the back over using this roundover bit.. which again has a bearing at the bottom and follows the body
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0124_zpsuhvvwxgm.jpg
That's better all nice and smooth
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0126_zpsagdi7op9.jpg
And heres that top again in different light
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0130_zpsjyw9y90v.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0131_zpswjo8phgg.jpg
So there we are.. Im really happy with the results... I would have done the binding but am waiting for it to turn up in the post (which it should do within a couple of days).... meanwhile now I know whats going on with the body I will continue with the neck tomorrow and get that down to size, get the tenon done and maybe fret it.

I have ordered my Korina top and neck from where you suggested on eBay. Ian seems a great guy to deal with
Cheers...
And yeah hes a nice guy.. I don't live too far from him so went and collected it myself and we had a good long natter... Are going to post your build?

Oky doky...
So first thing today I decided to check the positioning of everything..
Possibly like this
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0092_zpsm0sffsji.jpg
Or maybe like this?
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0093_zpsxzvxkldk.jpg
Will think about that... Next is to do the binding.. I know that the edge of the top will be a mm or so over but I did that because its better to sand it down.. if you try and do it exactly you probably wont by hand and once that wood is gone its gone.. Better to be cautious.
Heres my tools...
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0095_zpsogjlowr5.jpg
Always good to scuff up the side you are gluing.. helps give the glue something to stick too
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0096_zps7lxihcpl.jpg
The tape is for my fingers.. Or I always get superglue all over them.. Hate that
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0097_zpsrwgyoyyi.jpg
I do a two layer binding. Usually black and white.. In this case the white is going on first.. Half done
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0098_zps1bobfyp1.jpg
Sorted
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0099_zps96rvt3hv.jpg
And the black layer... sorted
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0106_zpswppbjwy9.jpg
You can see that slight lip on the top edge.. that will be gone soon
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0108_zpsjt3fan9l.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0113_zpsfl1odyfn.jpg
Next I went at the horn area cos its hard to get in there with an electric sander (well the ones I have anyway)
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0118_zpsfwxxusga.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0119_zpsjawk4wk6.jpg
Here I have sanded the edges so its now all nice and flush
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0124_zps1f9celpq.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0127_zpsm7jfb89p.jpg
Not easy to photo but you can just see.. I smoothed all of the edges around the carve, especially the back end which is a bit less pronounced now and more subtle.
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0145_zpssdrofnox.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0158_zps2kjbntyp.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_0157_zpsqpf0cori.jpg
So there we go... Still didn't get to that neck yet but that will be done soon enough.. Then comes one of my favourite bits, joining the neck and body
I hope this is all not too boring for you guys.. I know theres loads of build threads so you've probably seen all this stuff loads of times.... More soon
