Is this in 3/4 or 4/4?

Simple question and a simple song. I am counting it as a bunch of faster 3/4 to get the groove right. Emphasis on every second 1 beat. So 1,2,3,1,2,3.

Would it be technically more accurate to count it as a slower 4/4, with emphasis on the 3rd beat, 1,2,3,4?

Thoughts?

I'd say 12/8, although there are a number of 4 over 3 polyrhythms.

Thanks for the input @paul_c2. I can see 12/8 working although I'm not sure which sections the polyrhythms come in. 

Thinking back, the only way a 4/4 works is if it's swinging massively, so probably doesn't make sense to write it that way.

Either 6/8 or 12/8 (or you could say it's either 2/4 or 4/4 with triplets throughout - which is the same thing).

I'd favour 6/8 (or 2/4), rather than 12/8 (or 4/4), because of the accents - it has that classic tick-tock, rocking-horse motion of 2/4 - and because the tempo is a bit too slow to carry all four beats in one bar. 

Contrast with The Angel Gabriel which is in 12/8 (sometimes 9/8) and is much quicker - the tempo can carry 4 beats to the bar. 

But it's really 6 of one, a dozen of the other, if you'll pardon the pun. 

It's not in 3/4 because the beats would be too fast - it's not a waltz - doesn't have that oompahpah feel - they're just quick triplets.

What they all said. It's either 6/8 or 12/8. Which one isn't particularly important.

Appreciate all the replies guys. I'm liking the 6/8 the most so far. Seems to count most naturally and I guess that's what matters.

Yeah after another listen, 6/8 fits better.

I'd say its 6/8 because of the way the percussion sits in the bar. 12/8 doesn't make sense to me.

listen to the phrase length, count 1, 2, 3, 4
there are kicks on strong beats 1 and 3, and 2 snares to the bar on beats 2 and 4
and this type of drum pattern is perfectly normal in 4/4
switch 4/4/ to compound time and you end up with 12/8

the clue to my ear is in:
- the chord changes and how the guitar preempts the end of each bar with the short chord on strong beat 4.
- the phrasing of the vocal melody; sings on strong beats 1 and 2, pauses 3 and 4

interestingly, the chorus and mid-8 fit 12/8, but the verses switch from 1/8 triplets to 1/16 sextuplets..
so the verses have a more 12/16 vibe against the overall 12/8

I'd score this in 12/8

Actually I hear some bits push as 12/8 and some as 6/8 ... not the same push all the way through

The push changes to my ears around 41 seconds ... changing to 6/8 from the 12/8 .... just a different emphasis, subtle but there I think
