Dirt pedal blindness, SORTED FOR NOW.

What's Hot

edited January 2017 in FX
I'm going round in circles here, I have no dirt pedals after a purge and need replacements.
I'm in a house band for a Jam night so need versatility.
I dep for a couple of bands where I need classic rock tones, lizzy, pearl jam, acdc, ratm, metallice etc.
I've also got a new band project playing dirty jangly post punk ish type stuff, ruts, blonde, Undertones, jags, police.
I play a les paul with Bareknuckle mules.
Here's the catch, for the jam night I use a peavey bandit 80's era solo 65. My main amp for all other projects is a Rivera Chubster.
 I have a budget of £200.
I'm happy with the dirt channels on my chubster but something to brighten it up a bit would be nice.
I'd like something to add a bit of life to the clean channel when playing clean on the bandit, it's serviceable but uninspiring.
I get all my dirt from pedals into the clean channel on the bandit.

What I'd maybe like is three pedals, a boost, a mid gain, a heavy gain.
Things I've been looking at:

Tc spark boost
Green rhino
Ocd
Dls
Crunchbox/super
Riot
J rocket animal.
Angry charlie (I know)

There are too many options out there and it's driving me mad, I don't have the option to go try them all.

HELP!

Buy used...? Many of us have many fine pedals in need of new homes.

  • Boost SD1, Mid gain BD2, Heavy gain - not sure but you should have a good chunk of budget left if you buy used

A good all-round lead boost is the good old Boss SD-1. I've yet to find a reasonable quality amp they  don't work, and sound good with. Also look at a Tubescreamer based alternative. The MXR GT-OD and EHX East River Drive are good, not overly expensive alternatives.

If you're looking for an alternative to a dirty amp channel, then any of the Marshall dirts would be good place to start. The Mk1 Guvnor would be my first choice, with a Drivemaster, Shredmaster or Mk2 Guvnor coming in a close second place. Another great alternative is the Hardwire CM-2 Tube OD, with the Hardwire Tube Distortion as a very capable higher gain unit.

Get a Randall rg13 or a gurus 1959dd depending on taste. 1 pedal does all and more.

  • Klone, OCD and EQ for boost.

    TS/SD1, SL Drive, Micro Amp.

    Bad Monkey, Suhr Riot, Spark.

Any of those or any combination of the three would be great into pretty much any amp.

Barber Gain Changer or Fulltone Catalyst are both very flexible. I've had both but the Gain Changer is the one on my board.

  • A Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde would cover all of that pretty well. Use the change for fun boxes that the audience actually really care about, like weird swirlies and fuzzes :)

  • At the risk of sounding self serving, I have two dirt pedals for sale - a Snouse Blackbox 2 which can get pretty damn gainy and a Little Green Wonder clone, which is basically a Tubescreamer modded to have a wider frequency response. Both get pretty gainy when you push them; when you stack them....

The Snouse also features a JEFT boost which you could use independantly; and the LGW clone can be used as a boost also...

MXR Super Badass distortion seems really versatile, could be worth a look?

OK thanks everyone, honestly this has been no help at all ;) I'm just gonna have to buy something and continue on the eternal pedal merry-go-round.

  • Thorpy Warthog - can do it all!

or a peacekeeper - all the eq flexabity can be used to push your dirty channel and be a really nice chimey low gain on your cleans
