Another shout out for Emily Remler.
the series involved celebrities learning to play an instrument and giving a performance. I think it was called Play it Again. Anyway, one episode had Bill Oddie learning the guitar with a view to playing at his daughter's wedding. His tutor was Bridget Mermikides (a superb female guitarist) who tried in vain to actually teach him anything. He came across as a complete nob and I definitely got the impression that, had his tutor been male, it might have been a different story.
Anyway, to echo what's been said, welcome to the forum and enjoy your guitars!
Pics, or it never happened.

So you get that even if you own a penis.
There are plenty of amazing guitarists of both genders. Go for it. This is a useful place to pick up technical stuff & get questions answered about gear. But remember it's just opinion. Do what works for you.
As I said, Joanna Connor.
Heres a good modern band with a great female singer and she plays really well too
AND theres also Fanny.. One of the first all female rock groups ever

Its definitely not wrong for you to want to learn guitar, guitar is for everyone. I am a 31 year old woman and I've now been playing for 1 year. I think I have probably made average progress for someone taking lessons. If you can afford lessons I think its worth taking a few as I personally find it easier to learn after being shown how to do it by someone else and your tutor will help you correct bad habits. I also feel like I need a bit of guidance in order to progress at this stage. I have similar aspirations to you but have a strat not a les paul and I also want to learn how to finger pick and make my own arrangements on acoustic guitar. My tutor teaches guitar, bass and drums full time, almost all the other students Iv met in passing whilst going to/leaving my lessons have been adults, slightly more men than women but all having a good time learning their chosen instrument. I have been too shy and worried about having a similar experience as you did to go anywhere near a music store and bought my guitars based on internet reviews which I know is a no no but has worked out ok so far. The only store I have spoken to over the phone was andertons and they were really nice and helpful when I rang to find out what to get as my first guitar (Yamaha pacifica).
this earned me a 2 week ban ..

I'm late to the thread, but this is the perfect response.
Band recommendation for probably my biggest influence alongside John frusciante - warpaint. I'd love to have the talent and creativity they possess.
If you can play guitar, why make it about your chest.
There are loads of talented female guitarists out there.
Something a little different:
she is amazing at everything!
im off to try and convince myself it's all about feel ...
Really like this piece
The guy in the shop obviously forgot to mention the hundreds or thousands of guy's he's dealt with that 'think they know how to play guitar'!
I bet there aren't many people on this forum who haven't, at some point, came across a similar idiot in a music shop!
I work in retail (bikes - bear with me, its relatable) which probably has a similar ratio (to guitar) of male to female customers, mostly guys, lots of whom come in and think they know everything.. we get quite a few ladies in the shop who are getting into the sport and are surprised at how helpful we are, having had arrogant/unhelpful service elsewhere.
Shocking to see such 'service' from businesses, in a sport that we're really pushing to get more females involved.
Unfortunately, as you've found out, it happens..in music shops and elsewhere.. but sounds like you've got a local shop you trust so thats good.
You'll find forums like this much more friendly and supportive!
Ignore the idiots, do what the hell you want, and have fun
