Cannot wait for this new album. Another concept album rumored to be called Emperor of Sand. Sounds like they're going back to their Blood Mountain and Crack The Skye sound which are my favourite two albums possibly of all time.

  • Oooh....liking the sound of the clip, also liking the idea of a return to a concept album. Crack The Skye towers above their other work for me.

  • Mastodon and Deftones are the only metal bands around at the moment that do it for me.

There are loads of metal bands around at the moment that are really good.

Any recommendations? I'm not up to speed on current metal.

A few things that be worth a listen

Torche (and Floor who precede them)
    Big Business
    Royal Thunder
    Urfaust
    Mgla
    Batushka
    Keelhaul
Today Is The Day (half of Mastodon were in them at one point)
    Hark
    Baroness
    Star Gazer
    Portal
    Wolves In The Throne Room

A mix of styles but may appeal

Torche, Big Business, Keelhaul, Hark are hardly what I'd describe as metal. Not trying to be difficult, but I don't really agree.

This new Mastodon stuff just sounds like a duller rehash of better earlier material. I'd say they peaked a while ago.

But then neither would Deftones but if someone likes Mastodon then Keelhaul would be the obvious recommendation as they were doing something very similar just before Mastodon started.
None of them would be classic heavy metal but they might definitely appeal to someone that likes Mastodon and Def tones. Certainly more than the new Ranger and Eternal Champion.

I saw Big Business on the last Mastodon tour and while their drummer is clearly pretty immense their set was a snoozefest after the first 5 mins.

  • I would second 'Today is the day-In the eyes of god' as it has Mastodons bassist and drummist.
Not current i suppose but worth getting if your into Mastodon.
