Best pedal to add a bit of Chime and Sparkle

What's Hot
ZoolooterZoolooter Frets: 886
edited January 2017 in FX
Using single coils (tele) neck and middle position need a bit of extra chime/sparkle, but definitely don't want an increase/boost in volume. I also play mainly without a pick which probably has a lot to do with it. My amp is a 6V6 bogner.

TC Spark??
Wampler 65 Black (gain on 0)??
Any basic compressor with the gain turned down??
or just a simple  EQ???

Cheers in advance for any recommendations.

Have a look at the BBE Sonic Stomp. Your amp will sound a lot clearer with that beast on. Also the super hard on is very chimey at unity

A buffer at the front of your chain will help if you haven't one already. Magnetic Effects Zola is a bit special, switchable buffer too.

  • I agree, a buffer. Best investment I made has been the Cornish LD-1...does exactly that!

Firebottle makes everything sound better as does the SHO.
They can be used as buffers at unity level.

+1 - thoroughly recommend it & they are even better in a serial FX loop.  The BBESSM really does take the blanket off your amp you never knew it had!  I tend to keep both dials at around 6-7 for optimum results.

I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

I wanted this when I had a DRRI (6V6) and the following pedals worked well with that and also my H&K Tubemeister 36 (EL84s) but less so with my Divided by 13 JRT 9/15, which does have a 6V6 side, so just bear that in mind that sound scan differ even if the valve type is the same. My issue -  I found it hard to tame the top end without compromising other pedal sounds:-

Way Huge Pork Loin - my fave of the lot
    Catalinbread Formula 5FS
    Xotic RC

BbE sonic stomp does exactly that.  Compressers don't do the same thing at all
The bbe is like a awesome presence control that works on treble and bass and just works( unlike most presence controls..)

Thanks everyone, just bought a BBE.

  • Just to add, the pedal works a treat, exactly what I wanted. Really opens the amp up at home volumes. The product description of "it takes the blanket off the amp" is exactly right - for lower volume playing anyway.

Nocturne Atomic Brain is also another stunning pedal.
The BBE likes to be at the end of the chain, the Atomic Brain liked to be first, though some fuzzes can have a hissy fit about it.

Both are different, both brilliant pedals.  Both really open up your amp.

I use a similar setup (single coils, 6v6, finger picking) and get that sound using a combination of VFE White Horse compressor and Maxon CS-550 Chorus. A good compressor will get you most of the way there and the chorus adds an extra density to the chime when required.

Other comps I've tried that do that are the mxr Custom Comp, Analogman Juicer, Bearfoot Evergreen, DOD 280 and Barber Tone Press but the White Horse has a secret sauce that I'm addicted to.
