It doesn't need to be finished, so feels amazing. And it smells nice too. :0)

Because it looks like rosewood, but its export isn't legally controlled and therefore it's more cost-effective to use without compromising visuals or quality.

this, I really like it. In fact i pretty much exclusively prefer bare wood on a guitars neck, no stickiness and slick as you like.

....even better is a nitro neck stripped bare only by continued playing....

Most doesn't look like rosewood.  That's baked maple rather than roasted ;)

Most roasted maple just gets  a nice amber honey colour.

the process is the same, and if you take it too far you will be left with a pile of dust

The aim is strength and stability, which is apparently improved by the process

Yeah I had baked maple on one of my Gibsons once...  Really liked it.. VERY similar to Rosewood (actually as far as I remember it was smoother) and now as mentioned is going to be easier to use as it wont require any paper work to go with it.....

    Roasted, baked or even torrified.

The torrifiction has an effect on the moisture and oils in the wood
It does to a degree simulate an effect that happens over years to a piece of maple
The big advantage is that after this process, the wood becomes much less susceptible to moisture and climate changes, resulting in a more stable and predictable piece of wood.  This is great for necks, especially, and will minimize need for adjustments between seasons and different weather conditions.   An extra added bonus from this process is that, while stabilizing figured maple, which is typically not so stable, it also greatly enhances the colour and figuring in the wood.

i think it is worth distinguishing between the fretboard wood/rosewood replacement gibson used and the  stuff shown in the pic above.    the same process is used but the aim is quite different.  although some gibsons are quite light, they are generally after a dark wood look as the primary aim

those gibson boards  are quite different to these musikraft necks

So, will the lovely customs wood specialists be able to tell the difference between a rosewood fingerboard and a baked maple one trying it's very best to look like rosewood? :)

TBH I doubt it.  Or at least I doubt they will care.  The burden of proof does not sit with the customs employee.

  •  New CITES regulations recently implemented mean that rosewood is now much harder to import/export and move around the world, so a lot of people are looking to roasted maple as an alternative. https://reverb.com/uk/news/new-cites-regulations-for-all-rosewood-species
