  • @gibby do you have a decent (wide and / or padded) strap?  My SG2000 is about the same weight as yours, but I find it pretty comfortable with a 3" padded leather strap (Levy).

I recently sold my immaculate SG1000 for £1200, so I would say £1600 to £1800.

I sold my SG2000 back in 2011 for about £1300, but prices rise year on year.

That Guitar is still better than anything you could get for £1500 nowadays and I'd urge you to keep it.

I'm still sulking about that SG1000, as it was a great alternative to the Gibson Les Paul Custom.

I have an SG1802 which is my favourite (more like a 50's Standard), but I'm having to part with both for a House Deposit.

Check this out, as it shows how overpriced Gibson are in comparison:

    It's like Fender vs G&L.

TBH, they both sound terrible, the player doesn't help at all. I well remember the LP v SG kerfuffle when it all kicked off in the 70's till this very day, you just cannot compare the two as they sound nothing alike, its like comparing a Lemon and a Lime. I loved my SG1000s and would have another in a heartbeat, its the ergonomics of a Les Paul that do my head in

I think the only disappointment that I had with the SG1000 was with the Bridge Pickup

Because everyone refers to them as a 'Les Paul Killer', you expect them to sound like an R9, when it has the Upper Mids of a Custom. The Neck Pickup is better than any Les Paul Pickup in my opinion.

The 1820/1802 just sound exactly like a Les Paul, so there's no individuality other than the Cutaway and consistent Craftsmanship.

I switched back to them from a PRS SC58, which was misleading and just plain overpriced - They've tried the same guff with the 594.

I also hear them as sounding like a Custom and not like a Standard, glad to find I'm not alone!

True guys...this sound nothing like a Les Paul Std and I've played and still own a LOT of them!! The Les Paul Killer "truth" is also another "untruth".Yes, the SG2000 has loads of sustain, but it has a much brighter(less mids) sound. It's a GREAT guitar BUT is DIFFERENT from a Les Paul..so it's not worse and it's not better!

john mcgeoch is one of my top two or three guitarists ever & did all his banshees stuff with one. so i haven't even played one but i madly want a black one just for that reason.
    & that's a great looker for a sunburst & superb condition.

no idea what they go for but as for ebay prices, ask wise people here first or go to a dedicated forum for that brand/model.
i'm increasingly aware (as others mention) that price-puffing by sellers listing the same thing (even exaclty the same thing) at multiple high prices (to give the illusion that their asking prices are the typical going rate) is becoming a bigger thing now.

check out the completed solds (green highlighted) not the asking prices. & be aware even green sold prices can be cooked by sellers who buy their own things & then cancel the order & reclaim fees, leaving fake 'sold' prices in tact. it's a sleazy game & a poor system.

  • Yeah the older models (with the Thru neck) - sound like a mid-focused LP Custom to me - but tighter bottom end.

1820's sound like a really good Les Paul but with MORE bottom end....and the 1802's are very much akin to ballsier LP Juniors.  I have a very rare SG1801X - the Phil X model with a single P90X - and that, let me tell you, is a pure Rock Monster!!

Yep, I've got 3 nice wide Levy straps (leather both sides) and I've played bass in more bands than guitar, so a good strap is essential. I've got lower back problems that "come and go" and at the moment I'm fine; BUT the thought of it going again keeps me away from the heavier guitars (and basses). However,I will venture out on Wednesday with Yammy to rehearsals and see how it goes :# .. I will also be taking something lighter :)

I think the Yam SGs were very well regarded guitars in their day, very solidly made, and the Yamaha name is respectable. However, from a tonal, look, feel and weight perspective they are quite idiosyncratic guitar.  By which I mean their appeal and thus the market for them is much more limited than for Gibsons or Fenders or PRS.

It will certainly appeal to fans of the SG series so its a case of finding the right buyer at the right time for the right money. Selling these guitars at the higher prices discussed is therefore likely to take longer.  For that category of prospective buyer, a sale price of up to £1200 may be achievable for an SG2000 in top condition. In good condition perhaps £800 to £1,000.

If the SG is in less than good condition or the price is going to appeal to a first time SG buyer, a more realistic price would in my view be between £600-800 depending on condition.

The references to £2-2,500 are quite frankly ridiculous. At £2-2,500 you are in used Fender Custom Shop, Gibson R7/R8, and PRS anniversary territory which will retain value better, and be much, much easier to sell on.  Regardless of build quality etc, SGs simply don't have anything like the same street cred or desirability.

Posts here from folk saying lovely guitar is one thing. Paying over your hard earned wedge is something else.

Purely on a personal note, I've played three SG2000's. One was a friends who loved it, and two were in store. On the plus side the consistency of build quality, feel and tone was exceptional from the perspective that unlike Gibsons and Fenders, the feel and tone was virtually the same between each one. So if you've played one and bought another, you can be pretty sure what you're getting.  Actions were all good and plugged in sustain was reasonably good.

Downsides are that I just didn't like the shape, it was heavy and the balance felt comfortable round my neck, and I simply didn't like the tone which was uninspiring in all pup positions. Each of them lacked natural resonance and felt dead acoustically .. it felt like I was playing a big heavy plank of wood. I know these have their fans but  these are not for me.  This is just my experience and take on the three I played.  Of course if we all liked the same thing it would be a boring world.
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

Sorry, but considering a Gibson Les Paul Standard fetches £1350 2nd hand, a discontinued SG2000 should fetch at least £1500 in Excellent Condition - It's of Custom Shop Quality and not a Production Line Instrument.

I do however agree with you that they shouldn't fetch £2000 2nd hand, but £1600-£1800 (if in Mint Condition) is realistic and I appreciate that they appeal to a smaller crowd. Even if you didn't like them and tried one in Excellent Condition, I'd bet money that you'd cough up £1300.

My £1200 SG1000 was far nicer than any (Modern) Gibson Les Paul Standard:

@vale - I didn't realise most of the Banshees stuff was a Yam. You'd get on so well with my missus - massive Siouxie fan and loves her post punk stuff. In fact, this weekend we went down to our local record place and she picked up 4 more 7" singles to add to the collection...

I love the guitar sound on their stuff.
