If you're struggling with the weight of the '81 then I would buy one of the 3" straps from Leathercraft/Leathergraft in Liverpool and wear it high like Frank Gambale - That's what I used to do...Although, I do remember rather awkwardly busting my lip trying to take it off and shimmying out of sight.

They said they dropped the rib contour on the 1800 series to increase lower mids and bass response, but I think it's just Les Paul Custom Tone vs Les Paul Standard Tone (Apples & Oranges etc). Sub 9.5lbs is the sweet spot for an R6 (apparently).

Frank only wore it high because of his belly -what a player tho '

Yeah, it does have the stripped back look of a Standard and simpler binding, but I like the other modifications they've made.

I went to trade in my PRS SC58 for a CC Gibson Tom Scholz, but I got playing the SG1800 Series and came away with this. I've had an '81 SG2000, a '79 SG1000 and an '09 SG1000...So I'm a bit of a fan.

Didn't think I would like the overwound P90s and was looking at replacements before I went back to get it, but they cut the mustard and balance perfectly. I'm yet to come across a Seymour Duncan I don't like.

Here's a Seymour Duncan demo of the Pickups Yamaha chose, but in a similar Guitar:

Nice tight sound with plenty of grit - Makes you want to bite other pieces of wooden furniture.

Appreciate the offer but I'm happy with the Goldtop - Just need to sell this and my Superstrat to put towards a house deposit.

I had one of those in vintage white with the SD 59 pickups.  Really do miss that guitar, they're bloody brilliant!
