Is it weird to stick a p90 in the middle of a 3 pickup guitar?

I'm working on guitar build no 2. The plan was HB at the bridge, SC in the middle and Sustainiac at the neck.

All well and good, but playing my main guitar yesterday, I was hit by the fact that my favourite pickup is the p90 in the neck. I suddenly wondered how my guitar build would fare with a p90 in the middle instead of a SC? I'm not sure that I've particularly seen p90s in the middle - is there a reason for that?

Failing that, I suppose I could try a p90 in the bridge. I rather like high gain/sustain sounds though so maybe I need a HB?

Thoughts?

Trying it would seem a sensible way to find out.

I've got a Nathan Sheppard routed for three P90s which still needs rebuilding, but it's getting a Dimarzio P90-sized 'bucker in the middle position.

  • I have a Strat type with 3 P90's, the middle is good in combination with the bridge and neck, but is a little muddy by itself. It works well with higher gain tones though. It is like a brighter neck rather than a warmer bridge.
