So much for no new gear in 2017!

I've something rather special incoming this week.
Full pics to follow, but some teaser pics to begin with:

Handwired, 2x 6v6, 4x 12AX7, RCA jacks for reverb.. what could it be?

It seems to have an MJW logo:

Which may match the 2x12 cab I got last year:

Metro fx loop and powerscaling if I'm not mistaken.

Well UPS brought a very well packaged amp after lunchtime:

I have to say it's everything I hoped and more, @martinw ; has really excelled himself.

It's MJW #217: Roadstar Twin, pretty much the "kitchen sink" version with effects loop, power scaling and valve driven spring reverb. Channel 1 has a bright switch too.

It's been a long wait, but worth it!

The range of sounds is incredible. Channel 1 is a blackface sound with the gain low and the mids at 9 o'clock, but then the added versatility of the gain control so you can add tweedy grittiness, with more mids if needed. Turn the bright switch off and the mids up and you're into early Marshall territory.

Channel 2 is British voiced, and does more of a 70's Marshall thing, although with more gain available. The whole sweep of the gain control is usable which I find very rare in an amp. You can scoop the mids and boost the bass and do modern hard rock sounds, or boost the mids and turn down the bass for AC/DC tones.

Both channels are really touch sensitive.

Haven't used the effects loop or power scaling yet, but I'm very impressed so far. The reverb is lovely, and the whole amp runs incredibly quietly, even with the reverb on and a decent amount of gain.

I'm also really impressed by the drive control on the rear, which functions as a master volume. You can keep the volume very manageable while not killing the tone or dynamics.

  • I was at Martin's last week and was looking at that from across the workshop. I'm glad it was on the shelf and not fired up so I didn't get to hear it and reignite my compulsion to buy more and more amps

As promised, some very rough and ready clips (apologies about the noise floor, that's my recording rather than the amp).
No effects other than onboard reverb used for all but the heavy clip where I used an EMMA stinkbug as a boost. All played using a telecaster.

First two clips are channel 1 with bright switch on and reverb. Second two are channel 2. First one is mids most of the way up, second is fairly scooped.

Volume isn't huge, just above normal bedroom volume.

These are just a rough guide as to what the amp can do, I've just fiddles with the controls for about 5 minutes, I'm sure I'll refine them with a little more fiddling.

Dude stick a tubescreamer  in front of it with volume 50% and drive 0%, I'm killing to hear it.

Nice playing! :) And thanks for the mention.

I like this amp a lot, and I think I shall be building myself one during my time off, as it's an ideal home amp for me, with a good range of sounds to stop me getting bored and messing with umpteen pedals ;)

If and when I start up again, this would be one of the models that is carried over.
