I'm sure they use to be less than 20% but that might have been early days when they were building up a traffic flow - and vat on that 20% as well - I suppose it depends on what the buying price is, but with more visitors as such I notice many prices are far to high - But then a few items go below what I'd say is a good cost price - have to be there to win

Lot 26 the Edwards, as far as I know they only did Relic finishes to their higher end stuff (I don't think I've seen lower than a 115). It should be worth > £500 minimum I would have thought.

As Andy says, the days of finding 'bargains' here are long gone, you'll pay market value or have dealers running you up. Too much promotion, the only winners now are the auctioneers.

looking at eBay, asking prices are getting ridiculous.
guitars just setting there getting relisted time afrer time.
Just seen a couple of Hofner senators at £650. What on earth is happening.
are people just getting bloody greedy. Or are they over paying in the first place n then trying to get there money back.

I know we have postings on FB of items that have been sold at the auction and later appear on dealers site, but as an overview, and certainly with regards to more general products, I find I can't buy them at sensible prices anymore, so have not been for a while - I see a few examples after the auction that have been sold at not bad prices, but don't know if I can justify a day out on a whim

I think many items hi-lighted on FB after the auction that have been purchased by dealers, tend to be very specialist, or expensive vintage based models anyway, like the 58 Strat at Guitar Village - Some quoted a 8K hammer price and a 15K selling price - take into account 20% commission + vat but Guitar Village have speculated to accumulate and I don't know if it is worth 8K or indeed 15K - Yet if it is allegedly worth 15K, then a prospective private buyer should be able to out bid a dealer, as sooner or later the dealer will bale out of the bidding as there is no profit left in the deal

The auctioneers obviously want to maximise their prices and they now have  a good selection of stock each auction, that they can now run with one every 3 months or so - 3/4 years ago stock was thin on the ground for them

I think the failure to a large degree now with e-bay is the 'fixed buy it now' price - If everything went back to a bidding auction, then most/all items would sell, but would you as a seller accept that lower price - Yet equally that is what it is worth as if two bidders are left in the system that process will continue to push up the price - last bid wins, so really that is what it is worth

I agree now that many hope to get a certain price, that is over speculated  - So they just keep trying and trying - so do they eventually give up, or drop the price significantly

I'm always realistic when selling and accept what the market value is.
The keys is to be patient when buying and not over pay in the first place.

But that lower price you mentioned is actually more like the realistic market value.

I imagine the seller is hoping for a scenario something like this on some of those Ebay ones:

Loving wife: "I can't get in the spare room because you've got 18 guitars in there."

Husband (to keep the peace):  "Ok, I'll sell some of them"

Husband then puts some of them on Ebay at grotesquely inflated prices like £500 above the market value.

    It does not sell.*

    2 months later:

"You've still got 18 guitars in that room.  I thought you were selling some."

"They have been on Ebay for 2 months but not sold.  I'll reduce them to get a quick sale."

Reduces price by £100 so now £400 above market value.

    It does not sell.*

    2 months after that:

"You've still got 18 guitars in that room.  I thought you were selling some."

"They have been on Ebay for 4 months and I've reduced the prices and they have still not sold.  You don't want me to sell them for knockdown prices do you.  The market is very soft at the moment.  My fellow GAS addicts on the Fretboard told me that.  Maybe I should keep them for a bit and try again when the market recovers."

*If it does sell at the inflated price then it's a win anyway as you now have more GAS money.

Add in to the equation certain dick heads who seem to think that because something is advertised for a particular price then their example is automatically worth the same or more (because theirs is the "best one they could find/ever played").

Try explaining to these prize pricks that the same guitars/amps/effects have been for sale for the thick end of two years in some cases and that the *sold* price on eBay is fairly easy to find, and a far better idea of what something may be worth (minus fees) and you get reported to the mods for being "aggressive" or for commenting on pricing... no, its not.

add to that - when they are selling they have seen them go at that inflated price (forgetting it is an asking price not a sold price) - But when they are buying they've seen them go for some bargain price, which you can't find

I had it twice last year where I contacted a seller on eBay that was selling a guitar that I was interested in but they were been totally unrealistic on thier price, so I offered what I thought was a realistic but more than fair price only to be told to basically piss off. only to be contacted by the seller several weeks later asking me to buy their guitar once They'd realised that my offer was actually a decent offer.
