Ibanez Sure-Grip knobs

What's Hot
Does anybody if there are any UK stockists of these or similar?  I've got them on my Ibanez George Benson and they're way more functional than the unresponsive top-hats I've got on my Les Paul.

I got mine from eBay but you need to check the spline/shaft size as the Japanese ones will not fit Gibson. uS pots

Interesting.  Good shout, @sweepy.  I switched them over earlier and they seemed to fit okay...maybe a bit of a tight fit.  Better check!

@TheGuitarWeasel - can you let me know what size splines/shafts are on the new pots you're pulling together for me?  If you stock anything like these above, send me an invoice

If you're struggling could you achieve the same thing with the standard top hats and some Lego tyres?

The Ibanez ones are Jap thread so aren't a good fit for CTS pots.  Ash's pots will be CTS.
Jap pots like Alpha have fewer splines but are deeper whilst the CTS and other USA made ones have more splines with less depth.
Be careful trying to put them on CTS post as they will often crack as you force them on . The plastic splines are deeper than the ones on CTS pots so you can improve your chances with making them fit by carefully trimming back the plastic with a reamer or a carefully chosen drill bit that will just reduce the size of the splines. It will still be tricky but it will improve your chances of it working out

These are the Suregrip 2 with the rubber on the top of the knob
The older lates 70s ones had a rubber insert (I preferred the look) but over a long time the rubber grip bands would get slack or perish and come off

All my pots are CTS, so what @FelineGuitars says is correct re them not taking Japanese knobs well (fnar fnar) there's a Trump joke floating around there somewhere ...

  • I use to have a Baker strat that had a pull pot on the last tone knob. It was a pig to pull, the solution was a rubber band!

Does the same go for EMG pots?
Would the Sure Grip 3 knobs fit on EMG solderless pots ok or are they likely to be the same as CTS?

Well I found the answer,..........I *think*.

The Sure Grip III looks like it's an 18 spline knob, I found a photo of one and counted them.
I just counted the splines on my EMG pots and there's 9 either side of the split shaft, making 18.

EDIT: I just counted the splines on the volume pot that came installed in my Ibanez Iron Label and that's 18 splines as well. Hold the EMG pot beside it and they look identical.....
