Gibson LPJ SC 2015

Well... tomorrow is the first time I'll be taking delivery of something other than a strat or tele body for quite some time! 

All being well, a SC LPJ will arrive tomorrow in a big gold hardcase with the robot (g-force?) tuners. I have a small repair to do on the pickup cavity (it was routed for a humbucker by the previous owner) but I'm unsure as to whether or not to run with the humbucker or revert to the p90...

As far as finishing goes this is where it gets tricky. I have grand ideas due to the amount of nitro I have in my workshop. And this Gibson is a sunburst never the less so I could even do a reveal relic. But something is drawing me to TV Yellow. Dunno, maybe I'll see what happens when it arrives!

Tv yellow is the best and biggest pita for me, I'm still trying to find time to repaint my first go at it on a special build I did

You could just put a humbucker p90 in it and if you don't like it try a split coil paf for more versatility

As @customkits says, proper TV Yellow is not easy, you need clean, open grain. But I reckon it's absolutely beautiful on a single cut Junior.

A few nights with Acetone and a toothbrush ahead?!

This '57 Special refin took me 2 full evenings to get the old paint of the grain:



But worth it though...

I have about 5 litres of nitro thinner here.... I'm sure I can get all that sunburst off

Having said that... I'm not 100% set on tv yellow just yet. I have a plethora of colours here and a few are jumping out at me. I may even go for a colour over the sunburst..

Are these 2015's a proper nitro finish??

Even if it's Gibson 'nitro' you might be better off with a heat gun and scrapers from experience.

I haven't managed to get the time to google the spec mate tbh. I'll be able to sit down and get a good look at it tonight in the workshop. As I said I'm not convinced by the tv yellow, just yet.

I'm not a massive fan of splitting humbuckers mate. To my ears the p90 sounds better but that's maybe just all in my head. I'd like this to be a good old p90 guitar as I'll be doing strats and teles there after

TV Yellow is a bastard to get right and not look dayglow there are so many variations from off white to cream to yellow....

I'd be favouring going towards an aged cream instead of attempting to be period correct. 

Having said... I'm stupidly tempted to do my other idea....

Yes it's looking poorly just now mate. I think tomorrow will be a good day to start this project properly

As I've mentioned.. I'm torn between two ideas. And they somewhat different

with a nice paf you'll get that clear sound, yes it is different to a p90 but not that much imo

I posted up a humbucker vs p90 pro demo which was interesting

Anyway just a thought as you have the route done
