does distance from nut to machineheads matter?

Feels like a daft question. Is it a daft question?

Seems pretty obvious that it won't affect things badly like getting scale length or intonation wrong, but is there any 'rule of thumb?'

    It affects tension and feel, thats why a reverse headstock Strat feels different to a conventional Strat

    It also affects the rate of pitch change as you bend a note. Shorter gives a tighter feel and a quick pitch change, longer a looser feel and slow pitch change.

    ...and if it's too long, you tend to get a harp effect.  Can be controlled and can become a sonic 'feature' but it needs some thinking through...
