A guitar stored in it's original case for 25 years

Would this cause any problems having been left in it's case for so long?
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

Ask a guy that's been married for 25 years, they'll know the impact.

Depends on so many other factors
Stored in a loft or shed - or nywhere that can get too hot /too cold or is damp it could be a problem.
Stored in a cupboard or under a bed/on top of the wardrobe ...could be absolutely fine

Many guitars have a re-sale value. Some you'll never want to sell.

  • Funnily enough back in 90's I was asked would I like to buy an old tele. Two brothers both bought guitars after getting good grades or something, on e a strat and one a tele. They left home and forgot about guitars till their mother died. So he brought the tele round and it was a mid 70's blond tele and still had plastic Covering on Pickguard. Not a mark on it, literally like it just came off production, sold it to Robbie McIntosh I think.

Depends where it's been stored as already said. Finish checking, tarnish on metal are at one end of the damage scale....,corroded pot contacts and pickup wire are all possibilities. Or.....it may be perfect....or not. Needs to be seen in orders to evaluate.

Have you found the Amp as well - the one that also hasn't been used for 25 years. Plug the guitar into it, and see if it makes your hair stand on end.

if it was new in the 90s and has been indoors it will probably be fine - 25 yrs is not old for a guitar. There might be mould/ a bit of rust, the neck (truss rod) would need adjusting and the fretboard might have shrunk a bit so the frets stick out a bit. If it's been in a garage, it could be much worse, as others have said.

Might possibly need to re-tune it.

    Why?

Do Teles sound better when they're out of tune? ;-)

its the effect of the strings on the neck that is the biggest issue. So depends upon what gauge, tuning and whether the case was laid flat, on its side or upright or an angle...

  • It should be fine provided it's been stored in conditions that you or I would find comfortable. String tension won't affect things - the truss rod will balance string tension, just like it does on all those >25YO guitars we have sat around strung at home. Pots and switches may have oxidised a little & might be crackly/intermittent, so spray with contact cleaner BEFORE turning the pots. If it's been stored where it may get damp or suffer temperature extremes then check for rusting of threads etc and the neck being twisted.

    Otherwise restring it and enjoy.

This isn't really relevant, but that's never stopped me before...

I recently realised that my parents, who are getting on a bit, had a whole house full of alcohol that they hadn't touched for 25 years.  I'm talking about a lot, maybe a couple of hundred bottles.  They don't have a cellar so it was stored in far from ideal temperatures.  We ended up pouring every bottle of wine away, after trying a lot of them.  All the spirits were fine though so I liberated about a dozen single malts and bottles of brandy.  It turns out that a 12 year-old Scotch remains 12 years old no matter how long you keep it.
