Just finished stripping my US Strat

What's Hot

Not something I want to make a habit of as was about a metric ton of poly and sealer on the poor thing. It is a Sunburst 2000 Fender Series USA Standard Strat and its about to undergo a change in colour.

I'm thinking I might give it the same treatment I used a year or so ago on a Jagmaster and go green using Cuprinol as I want a gig machine beater!

That's some nice wood there (fnarr) why not just varnish?

  • That's scrubbed up very nicely indeed.  How long did it take you and what techniques did you use?

I mainly used the 'air turning blue' technique.

Which involved a £11.99 heat gun from Amazon last night, followed by my Black & Decker sander and 60 / 80 grit and finished off with some elbow grease and finer grades of sand paper.

    Nice!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

I think that colour would look really nice on a strat body. Keep us updated!

I've wanted a green Strat for ages and so this was my reasoning for getting all organised and buying a heat gun to strip the poly.

  • Very nice to find a 2(?) piece body under there, so trans green would suit very well. Looks a fine job on cleaning it up too.
The sort of graphite colour on your offset is a great colour- I have plans to make a matt finish Mex Strat in that colour too, but seems a shame to cover the grain on that body.

    Nice job! :)

So much better without a layer of plastic on it.

That's a nice looking bit of wood. I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends up.
Might even sound better without an inch of poly on it as well.

Yeah I reckon it will sound a lot nicer without all that crap over it. There was a carrier bag full of the old poly and filler scrapings once I had finished removing it all!

You could sell the old finish on eBay.

    Genuine Fender part, and all.

It deserves a two colour burst or a thin nitro lpb. Nice job of stripping it.

stain and varnish.............. natural strats are just a bit meh for me.  Reminds me too much of all the late 70s copies   Kimbara etc

Probably wouldn't take as it's already been sealed. Which is a shame, the emerald kit is awesome (remember the telemaster on the old place? Can't remember whose it was...).
