Don't know your band's set up at all , but keen to hear how you go about Come on Eileen.
I've suggested this as a cover, as i think it would go down well, but best we could do is harmonica on the riff , but i don't know how well that would work.

Set list? Luxury! I generally have to work out what's coming next from the singer/front being's intro. If I'm very lucky he warns me of the one's which require a guitar change *and* gives me time to strap on the appropriate weapon.... I think the current "pick list" is something like...

    Pretty Vacant
    Swords of a Thousand Men

It's on our list to sort out.

You need to click the <> button, top right of the comment box.  Still not perfect, but you can at least see the line/para breaks.

You are a very kind man and I appreciate your help and forebearance. I think I may have to go back and facepalm my own posting now :-)

The original concept of the band was punk/new wave/2-tone/Electronic stuff from the mid '70s to the mid '80s, hence the name (7786) but I think John gives himself a bit of wriggle room these days by allowing influences and influenced. Anyway it's good fun to play (I get to be unfeasibly loud, raucous, and obnoxious in places) and seems to go down remarkably well with a surprisingly wide range of punters.

The Britney thing (basically if you imagine what it would sound like if The Ramones covered it in their traditional straight barre chords at 100 MPH style only louder, faster, and more aggressive that's about it...) is a hangover from an earlier incarnation of the band which started out as just for laughs when people but became some sort of trademark...

We are a four piece - As well as me on guitar, our singer also plays rhythm on a number of tracks (sometimes acoustic, sometimes on his Tele).

For Come On Eileen, I play the fiddle part as a lead lick on guitar, simple as that. OK we're missing the banjo twanging away in the background, and thus we probably bring to it more of a straight rock sound than the original had, but Stu's acoustic softens things up a bit.

The fact that we're a guitar band and don't have keyboards (never mind brass or strings) used to make me feel like certain songs aren't viable for us, but having played songs like Come On Eileen with our format, it soon becomes clear that as long as you turn in a good version of the song, people don't mind the details at all.

When I was in the Damnbusters we used to get asked for Come On Eileen which I thought was odd ( although there were odder requests!). I found out quite a few ska covers bands do it, just seen as part of that 2 tone era I suppose ( despite clearly not being a ska song). It is a good shouty chorus so I suspect it survives any instrumentation.

  • ^ This.  As long as you keep true to the general feel and rhythm of the track, you're OK. Fortunately we have a decent rhythm section, so they nail things like that.

Now, if only we could get the guitarist up to the same level.....
