Most recently, I have learned that when someone keeps telling me to relax it makes me very tense.

Also that I didn't spend enough on my bow.

Also that there is such a thing as CAS - cello aquisition syndrome - as I'm wondering about either a better amp or (perish the thought) an acoustic cello. The latter, though, seem to range from about £350 to about £80,000, making it hard to judge where the Goldilocks-zone is.

I'm still finding it tricky getting my hands into the right places without looking - and looking is particularly bad with cello on account of the fingerboard starting right next to your ear...

When I bought the bass I said to the girl in the shop (fiddle player) how do you consistently hit the octave note high up the neck without the benefit of frets, she said "you use your ears, dear" . That was me told : >
Bad advice. Ears bad. Fingers good.

Fingers and ears should be friends.

This week I have learnded that cello is harder once you take the 4th and 5th stickers off.

Also that my next cello should be from Germany, have been made in a year beginning with 18, and cost somewhere around £3500-£5500. I prefer to repress the memory of finding out what my third cello should cost, or how much I need to save up for a bow.

At least you don't have a pedal harp on the shopping list like we do  :(

A quick google suggests that "ouch" is an appropriate response.

Last week and this I have mostly been learning that Bach is really quite tricky.
At university I used to discuss music with a talented violinist. We agreed that Bach and Handel used the same notes, but in different orders.  Bach's note sequences were logical, which didn't mean they were melodic.  Whether or not they were easier to remember depended on whether you were a classical musician (him) or a mathematician (not me).

If you choose to play Bassoon, and want a good one, there is a particular forest in Germany that the wood must be sourced from; and there's a 6 year waiting list. I won't even mention the price.

I've been working on bowing mostly. Turns out there's an equivalent of 'tone is in the fingers'. If I tuck my little finger behind the bow my cello sounds much better. Weird.
