Moving from E to Am

What's Hot
I'm looking for a nice three chord run to move from E to Am.
Think for the change from in my Guitar Gently weeps, from Chorus, Am, G, C, E then it goes back to the Verse starting with Am.
Looking for a more jazzy feel rather than a straight chromatic progression.

Any suggestions?

Play in C major until you get to the E chord and then play an E7#9 arpeggio with some passing notes.
    Or treat the E as a ii V I ( so F#m7, B7, Emaj7).

The seems to be going in the wrong direction (Am to E).
I finish the Verse on E (two bars) the Chorus then starts in Am, So I'm looking at joining the two either going up to Am (5th) or going down to Am (4th)

    Sorry, I misread.
Treat the Am that you are leading to from the E as a minor ii V I.

    So Bm7b5, E7, Am7.

Loads of things you could try, depending on how out there you want it and how many chords you want in the progression:

    E7b10 Hendrix: 07678x
    E7 b9: 07676x
    Am

    E7b10
    Bb7 add6: 686786
    Am7 maj6: 577575

    E(alt): 12 11 12 13 13 x
    Am

    E(alt): x7655x
    Fmaj7 (no 3rd) add 2: x8555x
    Am

    E: 07999x
    Bm7: 79777x
    Bbm7: 68666x
    Am7: 57555x

    E7b10: 022133
    Bb7(aug4): x12334
    Am7: 575555
    (I like that one)

    F7 add9: x8788x
    E7b10
Am (as in still got the blues)

    They're all really nice.

Yeah I know - I struggled to work it in after the E - it seemed a bit like going backwards, but you're right and it could be done in the lead-up to the E, so after the C, one could do

    Bm7b5: 7 8 9 7 10 x, or 7 8 9 10 10 x (no 3rd)
    E7 or Em7 or E Hendrix
    Am

Or you could tri-tone sub the E for a Bb, like the saucy one above, which is actually very gorgeous:

    Bm7b5: 7 8 9 10 10 x
    Bbm7b5: 67899x
    Am: 57758x

That's got lovely voice-leading stuff going on at the top. Nice!

Have you tried any of that lot, Mr. Axe_m? It'd be interesting to know how you got on.

    I like
    E: x7999x
    Fm7b5: x8989x
    Bb7: 68x79x
    Am: 5xx555

It's basically a Tri-tone substitution like some of viz's suggestions.

From c you could try cmaj..c6..E7#9 ..E7b9..Am7 ..try these voicings

    Cmaj 7.. x x10 9 8 7
    C6..xx 10 9 8 5
    E7#9  ..× 7 6 7 8 x
    E7b9 ..x 7 6 7 6 x
    Am7 5 x 5 5 5 x

The one I like is the E Bm7 Bbm7 Am7, but sounds a bit too Jazzy, needs a some dissonance that resolves nicely to Am but also need to work with a nice bit of crunch

Or for a bit of Latin flavour

    0 x 4 1 0 x
    x 3 4 2 0 x
    x 5 6 4 x x
    x 0 7 5 5 x

dont nick that though, it's mine!

Ooo well how about doing that little thing Vai does in The crying machine before the solo, except he does it in E, and you'd do it in A, so basically you'd play the C for 4 beats then the E for almost 2 beats, then you'd play single notes (or power chords) F B Eb Bb__ A. (The B and Bb landing on the beats).

  • Ok next part of the song.
    Going back from the chorus.
    A, C#m, F#m, C#,Bm, E.

Now I want to go back to the Am of the verse via three or four chords, this time less jazzy?

    Option 1: just do single notes - E, F#, G, G# .. A.

option 2, fatten it out with chords:

    E major
    D first inversion: 254232
    G 355433
    E first inversion: 476454

The term "b10" made my brain itch Viz!

    #9 surely??

Anyway, just to throw my tuppence in the hat, I always like a V7b9 before resolving to a minor so my vote would be a

    Bm7b5, E7b9, Am

    7X776X

    X7676X

    5X555X

That way there's a nice chromatic run down!

  • E.......B half diminished....A minor.........or
      E.......F diminished. ....C maj7.......A minor.
