  • Hello all.

My name is Phil - I am based at PMT in Birmingham, and do the Guitar and amp repairs now.
Trevor (Buck) and Phil (Gowers) have now both left the shop (3 years and 1 year respectfully) - so I have taken over the whole of the repair department.

I am a guitar technician - not a luthier!  There is a big difference.

    Work I carry out:
Restrings, Refrets, Set ups, Fret dressing, Trem installations, Pickup installations, custom wiring and other modifications.  I do NOT do any finishing (spraying) or full custom work.

On the electronics front, if you have a problem come and see me or call me.

Just for the record too - Joe at 'Guitar Spares and Repairs' in the Jewellrey Quarter in Birmingham is no longer trading.  However, I do believe from recent conversations he will be coming back into the business maybe working from home (he is not sure yet).

    Here is my facebook page:

    Thanks for looking.

Would like to give another shout out for Andy Gibson on Denmark Street. Very nice, approachable bloke, knows his stuff, and charges very reasonable prices. He works in a hobbit hole under Macaris - you get to it through the door at the end of the hall (past Macaris door on your right) and then down the stairs. If the hall door is open, chances are he is there. If not, you could try the intercom, but note that he isn't there every day at fixed hours, so a preliminary phone call might be a good idea if you're coming in from afar with your guitar.

  • After seeing some recommendations here, I took a couple of Les Pauls to Adrian at Vanquish Guitars in Peterborough (just off the A1). Was after some general fret fettling and improved playability.

Really impressed: after a quick chat, Adrian totally got what I wanted...one week later, collected two vastly improved instruments...spot on!

After I'd dropped the guitars off, I became aware that Adrian's 'Heritage' Gold Top just got reviewed in Guitarist mag...bonus!

  • Right, I need a couple of pickups replacing on my MMJP-6, and (most likely) a rewire.

I'm hoping to buy a couple of Crunch Lab & Liquifires at the Guitar Show next year. It might be a push to get the work done by someone at the show (ahem!!).

So is there anyone in Cheshire/Merseyside I could use?

I could do Manchester at a push

Can't recommend Phil (Bristol Guitar Tech) highly enough. Did a sterling job for me - very knowledgeable and happy to let me watch the setup and explain what he was doing and why etc.

I agree- Phil is at present setting up my Fender Strat, a very nice approachable chap with lots of skill and knowledge on all things Guitar- He spenty 1/2 hour with me explaining what he would do to improve my guitar - his costs are very reasonable too, highly recommended

    Top man

  • Just got my Swamp Ash Special PRS back from Andy Swanston at ACS customs near Basingstoke. Fantastic service, fixed a terrible setup by someone I had had recommended to me and also fixed an electrics problem the guitar had had for a few years. Highly recommended for anyone in north Hampshire.

Just got back one of my Les Pauls from Gerald Gill at No. Tom Guitars in Denmark Street, London.

Work done was a new nut, glueing a tiny little hairline crack at the very top of the headstock, and a general setup.

Great guy, great work, true to his word.  I've tried 5 of the luthiers/techs in Denmark Street over the last few years, because it's a convenient location to me, and they all disappointed except for Gerald.  Definitely recommended!

  • Been to see Andy Crockett and Alastair Atkins just outside of Canterbury today who share the same building - two highly skilled guys building and repairing electric and acoustic gutars respectively. http://atkinguitars.com/  and  http://www.crockettguitars.com/Jazz/HOME.htm . I can personally vouch for these two who's services I have used over many years. Atkins is getting a very good reputation now with some of his guitars being used by some very big stars (McCartney, Dolly Parton etc.) Whilst there I also met John Case of http://www.caseguitars.co.uk/ - looks like he does some tasty instruments too.

Nigel at Leicestershire Guitar Luthier in Thringstone, Coalville, Leicestershire. Amazing work and always competitively priced. He is probably already in here but I couldn't find him on the search!!

I have contacted five guys over the last week to do some work for me. It's not much but it needs a skilled hand.

My local will only pick up and drop off at my local shop once a week on a Saturday, no matter how small the job. He works somewhere else where they won't tell me and only makes the trip once a week to drop off what's done and collect the next jobs. How there is ever any next jobs don't know but i'm not going without my only guitar for a week just for a couple of hours work.

Matt from St Ives did a great job with my frets but sadly this is woodwork and he very honestly told me he's not set up do that, which i appreciated. Matt is a lovely bloke who i talk to often and it's to his credit he didn't take it on.

Matt recommended John Haire in Peterborough. His website is excellent and it looks perfect except British rail want £70 for a day return from Bedford to Peterborough ! (And we thought selling the car would save money !) I haven't phoned John yet because of that.

There's another one in Stevenage who's name i forget but again he looks ideal but getting there is awkward. The only way i can do that is a coach. I don't mind that and £32 return is easier to swallow, not far above what petrol would have cost (Approx £15-20 round trip). The bloody coach company insists that i put my guitar in the hold underneath. It's in a gig bag so that's that idea out of the window too.

I emailed another local who's home-made website isn't wow but he seems to have work on and a comprehensive list of what he can do, but he didn't reply after a few days.

I phoned Abbot Music and to be fair he is very nice guy but he openly and very honestly told me straight he has had some family problems and won't be taking on any work for a couple of weeks due to that. He sounded traumatised when he answered the phone actually so i quickly apologised and said i would call him back if i needed to and wished him the best.

I phoned Howard in Leicester and left a really polite voicemail and he didn't get back to me either.

Do i just live in a dead spot?

I'm now looking into how much it will cost to get on the train (I live 2 minutes from Bedford Station) and get to Candlers in Kew. It's two changes at St Pancras/Kings Cross and a line change at Hammersmith.
My next operation isn't until September 8th but it's the big one this time, open surgery and as well as being in hospital for up to a week afterwards instead of day surgery, the recovery period is 3 times longer. While my mobility is severely affected now, it's going to be zero after the 8th so i really need this doing this coming week.

All it is, is the shelf that holds the floyd rose locking nut needs lowering and dressing and the two holes that secure it need to be filled and re-drilled as Jackson can't put them in the right place or drill them straight. It doesn't even need the strings to come off the guitar (Although if it did it's a 2 minute job with a floyd and some blocks) and once the 1st fret string height is correct, the rest will fall into place in minutes.

I'm not in great shape and can't walk far but i don't mind trying, i'm sick to death of being locked up in here anyway. I was trying to use the trains because the station is so close but the bus station isn't that much further, it's just their luggage policy that rules that out.
I'm not being lazy, i will do whatever it takes to get there but if i could find someone who will just do a quick job for me i would really appreciate it.

    Anyone got any ideas?
