What you are describing is exactly what a good treble boost would do and you can get one way under £200.
You could be right there @shaunm. That's the one pedal I've never tried

My advice would be to jump into the classifieds and buy @lustycourtier Beano boost for way under budget, play and grin all night long.

All it does is shelve the bottom end add a little touch of gain and massive amounts of cut. You might find you stop using the duece all together.

May just do that @shaunm :) Or am I kidding myself that this can be done with the J20? That (bloody) pedal show does illustrate often that with a higher headroomed amp that a great boost can be achieved. I don't feel I am maxing out the j20 which as mentioned is never really higher than 3. Am I asking too much?

On my 5e3 I knocked back the gain and tone to 12 o'clock. Which gave me a little more headroom.

Using the boost helps but if you turn off the duece, get your drive from the amp and then use the Beano for when you want a boost

  • I've used the beano boost with a tone king imperial as well as a blues deluxe so they do work very well with 'brighter' amps.

So tempted in buying yours @lustycourtier but I've spent so much on pedals and then lost on their resale 'cos they didn't work for me I feel I have to try before I buy now. Shame you aren't nearer to me :(

I didn't like the Beano Boost with my J20 & therefore sold it.

    Have you tried a tubescreamer?

@hotpickups I don't know how you run your inputs on your J20, but if are not jumping channels, might be worth a look to get an AB box, and then switch the normal channel in when you need a solo boost. I was just experimenting with this today and there is no better way to get more J20 than to add more J20 volume with the second volume dial :) Bonus is that the normal channel is also a bit thicker, so your solo's will sound big! Or you could get thegigirig's upcoming "Autopot" pedal, which can control the VAC on your J20, but I think it's only controllable via midi :(

Another great suggestion but it's starting to get very complicated :(

Just try jumping the channels and listen to the difference! :)

Oh there is a difference I agree as I used to do it. Just thinking of the extra faff just for the occasional solo boost. A pedal would be easier IMO.
