I'm not too sure about the body shape but I love that Headstock!

  • Nice, very nice :)

I do know that Mr Badger is actively looking for any of the old Mouradian basses, if anybody happens to spot one out in the wild.

    Thanks, folks :)
Before I was asked to do the build, I'd never knowingly come across the Mouradian/ Chris Squier shape.  I'm used to it now and certainly am thoroughly enjoying the build  :)

@digitalscream That's odd, maybe he regrets selling one of his on to that guy in the Extreme tribute band in Asia.

Mentioned in Pat's Amps & Axes interview:

Or maybe the offer was just too high to refuse. Alpacas gotta eat!

    Alpacas!  Cool or what!

Anyway, I think the paint is going to be OK.  It has levelled OK and I've been able to cover the one or two thin spots.  I think this is going to be alright  :)

Quite elegant in a pretzel kind of way ;)

Have a wow, that's coming together really nicely!

You might not have been aware that Pat Badger became an alpaca farmer after Extreme split. He still keeps a few as "pets".

When I spoke to him a couple of years ago (got a phone call from him after his Kickstarter campaign for his album), he definitely still had the Alpaca farm. That may have changed since the band got back together though, I guess.

    @digitalscream
That Amps & Axes interview from last month I linked to above has the latest on Pat's alpaca situation, Lee. :)

You might be more interested in the other content, granted! ;)

For example: Pat tells of how he first met Nuno in Mouradian's shop...

... and we're back on topic, folks!

And the first gloss coat is going on.  The playing part of the neck will be @WezV's excellent tru-oil 'slurry and buff' method of getting a silky smooth playing surface that still feels like wood.  The through-neck section will be gloss.  Colour-wise they will end up identical, just one section gloss and the other section satin.

After lots of fiddling about, got the body finishing done:

I'll leave it a couple of days to harden and then start the final steps - slurry/buffing the neck, finishing off the headstock and fret dressing, shielding the chambers and installing the electrics, then do the final polish in a couple of weeks when I know the varnish is absolutely and fully cured!

The varnish is hard enough for normal handling so on goes the shielding :)

  • Pretty much finished.  Still got to do a bit of tweaking on the frets and give it the final polish and do the arty-farty photos, but here it is:

I've got to tweak the angle of the jack holder, but this how the wireless Smoothhound will basically fit (or just a cable can be used).  The open access for the Smoothhound was an owner request.  It's invisible from the front:

I'll post the shots also on the Bass section just in case anyone is interested :)

  • Here's a couple of the shots I did before passing it over to its new owner:

...and pleased to report back that the new owner is DELIGHTED with it :)
