Can anyone explain what is going on here for me?

First track - what are they playing - is it a series of arpeggiated chords? I don;t understand but i'd love to try to replicate it.

It's just a series of scale notes played over a baseline, you could look at it as fragments of chords, or just series of individual patterns.

the delay and verb makes it sound busier than it is.

Seriously, with a singer they could be brilliant.

Tycho - "Awake" was my favourite album of 2014 by a country mile.
I can't imagine it with vocals but I guess it might work.

Sounds simple enough to play, I'm just not clear on how he is approaching the note selection - chords or scale. Going to go see if I can work it out...

Really?  This seems dull as ditchwater to me.  It's just a jam, right?  As @professorben says, there's loads of reverb and delay which makes it sound spacey and big but there's not much going on, just a few chords, and that staccato samenoteallthetimeasfastaspossible guitar style is really getting boring now.  The XX without the vocals or tunes.

edit: albums released in 2014 that are surely better than these guys - Temples - Sun Structures, Beck - Morning Phase, Wild Beasts - Present Tense, St Vincent - St Vincent, Drive By Truckers - English Oceans... etc.  I'd even take the Johnny Cash album over this, and he's dead.

It's got a certain something for sure.

I really, really like Money - see link below - and also just today bought the new Slowdive album, both of which use this soaring piano style of playing.

I'm a fan of the record but I don't often like to listen to more than a track or two at once.

As for this track, it's nothing special theory-wise, it's just a simple melody with the delay giving it a lot more rhythmic interest than it would have without.

love Tycho, great music for studying or perhaps travelling through a foreign country (Malaysia?) on a train with your headphones on wondering what you should do with the rest of your life . .

doesn't really work as well when you actually see them playing it like that in full band mode, "awake" and "dive" are absolute fucking masterpieces of electronica for me, but you see a guy with a les paul here and think hmmm why are they not rocking their socks off?
