PRS form

We did a free gig on Friday that the council organised (annual event). I've just been sent a form from PRS asking us to fill out the form with all the songs that we covered. Is this normal as I've never been asked to do this? Also and more importantly could I possibly be hit with a charge / fee or something if I did fill it out?

The charge if any is due from the venue owner, they just have to submit a list of songs played which forms the basis of the divi given the artists by the performing rights society. The more your song appears the larger your slice of the divi, although local town hall with 400 people against Radio 2 with several million is a bit of a moot point. Anyway you are free to put the artists and track down. If you know and are friends with any poor 'published' writers you might enter thier work to give them a lift.
There is no comeback on the performer and yes it's not uncommon, with council venues this and PAT test certs and PL insurance are the norm.

That would only count against you if it goes via the venue and HMRC ever check thier records.

If it was a free gig HMRC will have no need to dig.

Just interested to know how PRS knew it was happening?  These are the people who send invoices to businesses at random hoping they're going to cough up some money.

It was the council who sent me the form. They have to behave appropriately I guess :)

At the risk of putting him on the spot I think @Kebabkid knows this stuff best.

I've been asked to fill in a Prs form of songs played several times but always at the gig never afterwards and it was the Prs doing a survey themselves not the promoter.
It could be that they do submissions to the Prs.

If if it bothers you then leave it and see if they chase it up.

I've returned it now but didn't sign it etc. In fact they could've done that them selves tbh. I've just entered songs of local songwriters :)
