It seems to be discontinued but look for one of these second hand:

    https://www.andertons.co.uk/p/321500965/bass-guitars/squier-standard-p-bass-special-in-black-metallic-with-rosewood-neck

It has a Jazz neck so you get the narrower neck than the normal precision that you want.

We've got one at my church.  I'm almost at the point where I prefer it my Mexican Classic Series Jazz.

  • I got a Squier 70's Jazz bass for @£150 on Gumtree last year.

Very well made, and sounds great.

    Carol Kaye recommends Ibanez

If they paid me, I'd recommend them too!

I recommend a Yamaha bass.  I have a bb614 from my bass days, great stuff

So for various reasons I'm thinking about getting a cheap P-type bass (either with P or P/J pickups, but I don't much care about the J.)

Budget maybe £300 - a Squier is probably fine, and I know there are several even cheaper ones around, eg Harley Benton and others.

But... I'd really like a smaller, more compact body and a narrower neck than a traditional Precision, so looking for any suggestions about what's available.

I've noticed the Yamaha TRBX174, and the Ibanez GSR200 (though that has the P pickup in reversed orientation - I'm not sure how much difference that makes.)

There's also the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass, though I'm not sure how well I'd get on with that body shape...

    Any other ideas?
I don't know where you're based, but Aylesbury Music has a lovely Jap Squier P Bass in at £200, or an Indo Squier Jazz for £150.

The old Squier Classic Vibe P Bass was great for the money.
Or a second hand Tokai Jazz Bass.

Squier basses always seem to be more highly regarded than their six-string siblings. I've owned a couple, and they do seem to punch well above their weight. A CV or VM (take your pick) won't disappoint, and can be absolute bargains used (new, they're not far off MIM Standard prices). I decided I had to have a Squier CV Jazz after I saw Mark Bedford of Madness playing one on Jools Holland!

If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

Try as many types as you can. You'd be surprised how a p-type and a j-type sound different. Fretboard wood too.

Squier Vintage Modified series has the potential to be a bass for life. The initial purchase price is reasonable. Most of its weak points can easily be upgraded. If/when you graduate to a professional quality instrument, the Squier continues to serve as a backup.
    Be seeing you.

Define "real Fender". Does MIM count? Does MIC count?

Go to ebay, search for "fender precision -(squier,squire)", look in the "Completed Listings" to see what they've sold for.

Good question - I'd say if it has "Fender" and doesn't have "Squier" on the headstock (and is genuine, of course).

Second hand Mexican Fenders go for that kind of money, if you shop around a bit.
