Cellos are bloody expensive

What's Hot

After seeing the piano guys at the albert hall last week I've been inspired to learn Cello,

Have read that similar to guitars, the ones aimed at the lowest point of the market are going to be difficult. Looked into some basic models... Christ they're still expensive.

I guess that dream will have to put on hold until my mortgage stops eating my wages!

My starter cello was £1800 but you don't need to spend anything like that on an instrument to learn on. I can ask my cello teacher for suggestions, but I think one of the others at Cello Club spent about £600 on a cello and bow and it sounds perfectly decent. You can hear the extra money in my teacher's 17th century cello, but they both sound like cellos.

think this is what he got:

Stentor make mighty fine beginner double basses too.

    Well regarded company.

The bows are expensive too! Did a gig recently with a folk band and the cello player let slip his bow cost him £5grand

  • I once knew a girl, who played Cello,
the music from between her legs was mellow....

    Corrected.
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

Nah, there's a difference, and they definitely sound like cellos, not like celli.

    ;)

    That's rule #4.

Rule #7, interestingly, is "nothing on the treble clef", which gets awkward at times. There's only so far the tenor clef gets you.

Guitars are relatively inexpensive so we are surprised when people pay £600 for a starter instrument.  If you are a shotgun shooter, a decent clay gun will be north of £2K.  And bicycles can cost serious money too.

I don't think a clay gun would last long - aren't they usually made out of metal instead?

Also my cello teacher has confirmed that the Stentor II is an excellent choice for a beginner and will see you through to intermediate. The Stentor I is apparently not very good.

I think these are also worth a good look:

I've always found thomann named instruments to punch way above their weight and the 56 reviews are worth reading....

    I've heard some plywood-topped cellos.

    They're not nice.

:) I should have written trap gun [or skeet, FITASC sporting, DTL etc.].  Apologies for my error.....

They can be pretty good for double bass - if playing pizz is the priority.

    Not so great for arco.
