I'm after a good 5 string bass and wondered if this might be worth the risk?
Any luthiers out there got an opinion?

I'd say so. Won't cost much to get fixed (or DIY if you fancy).

In fact, having an Ibanez neck crack fixed next week. And it's a gazillion times worse.

The real problem with that is that it's so fine a crack that actually getting glue into it is the difficulty. It can be done with very thin superglue/cyanoacrylate usually - you'll need to accept bit of finish damage that will need rubbing back, but otherwise it should be straightforward.

Does it need fixing? I'd live with it as it is, it doesn't seem to affect the structure. Nice bass.

    edit. I'm not a luthier.

Worst that could happen is it gets worse, which would ironically make it an easier fix (if it opened up a bit)

Go for it. If it's affecting play then you are probly gonna have to sink a bit more in to fix, but it would still be a reasonable bargain.

Strictly speaking the split is only in the head, not the neck. As IC says, tricky getting glue in there and in fact I would bet a professional repair would involve cutting slots along the splits and fitting slivers of a similar wood.

It's your money. Ultimately, only you can assess the risk.

If you want to play safe, buy my Warwick Streamer Pro Stage 1.
