Latest FRFR options for modellers

I'm currently using a Yamaha DXR10. It sounds great, particularly at loud volumes.

But I am considering something different partly for space reasons - square boxes (or wedges that can be stood upright with a flat top) are easier to fit into the space I have, and partly because although the fan on the DXR10 is no louder than my PC, I have an unreasonable and pathological hatred of fan noise when I'm playing guitar.

(For some reason the fans on my PC don't bother me. Don't ask me why, I don't know!)

One of the reasons I went with the DXR was a greater freq range than most FRFR, so I could use it with bass. However, I'm getting better bass results using my trad bass cabs, and I like to go 4CM with my Darkglass head for bass use.

So any replacement for the DXR10 does not need to go as low as the DXR does.

My short list is

Atomic CLR
Matrix FR12
Red Sound RD LG12
Friedman ASM-12

The Friedman is probably the outside choice as it is about twice as heavy as the rest. But then again I'm not going to be moving it very often so maybe that won't really matter very much.

Are there other fanless options I don't know about?

Anyone given all / some of these a proper go?

You could have a passive speaker and a fanless power amp.

  • If you want fanless would you consider some studio monitors instead?

If there's somewhere else to store your DXR10 then that could still be used for live, and monitors would be fanless for home use.  Not sure how optimal they'd be in the space you're describing, but it's an option anyway.  I do all my home playing through monitors now, guitar or bass.

Is the fan on the DXR10 connected to a temprature sensor? Or is it always on? It probably doesn't need it on all the time.

I can only give the Red Sound a big thumbs up - great bit of kit.

I did think about some monitors as an option, but ideally I don't want to have to store the DXR, but I also want something I can take out with me on the fairly rare occasions I take a guitar rather than bass.

  • The Red Sound looks the most interesting. I've had the CLR and it was very direct and un-organic sounding. I tried mates Friedman and it was better but huge and heavy.

One on the 10" or 12" co-axial floor wedge monitor designs from RCF or dB Technologies (an RCF sister company) is worth a look. Alot of their designs are fanless. Another brand doing good work are FBT.

A constantly operating fan would do my head in to.

The Atomic CLR is excellent sounding.

Although it's probably bigger footprint iirc from when I tried it.

    It's also a grand.
    Red ones are better.

£1000 opens up alot of options for products from the traditional PA manufacturers... which is essentially what an FRFR cabinet is. Alot of them will have bigger economies of scale so you may get better value for money

I don't want to spend that if I don't have to.

I'm leaning towards the Red Sound as I haven't seen a single bad review anywhere, and it is an easy fit in the space I have.

Plus, Thomann's return policy is very good too.

The L2 fan is only on when the monitor is making a noise
it cuts out a second or so after you stop playing
the L3 sounds mighty but they are fairly big

I had a DXR10 and can't say I ever heard the fan, can't you just replace it with a new brushless quiet fan? there not expensive.

Funnily enough I'm wondering more about getting some monitors. Native is getting me interested in writing music again.

I might just wait for a bit and do some writing and recording with headphones and see whether I stick with it

  • Matrix FR12 and Friedman didn't impress me an awful lot. That said, the Friedman sounded nice but wasn't to my tastes, it definitely added a flavour of something, it wasn't as flat as the DXR's (even though they're not perfect either). Didn't like the Matrix, didn't seem to be punchy enough, for my tastes and it didn't go quiet enough either.

  • I want to try QSR's (I think they're called that) and the Atomic...but right now I have a stereo pair of DXR10s, which sound fantastic for my needs (low volume most of the time). I don't notice the fans even at the volume I play.
