Also older Peaveys, used Yamahas, can be picked up sub £100.

I was going to say a Squier PJ bass- covering both!

  • There's a squire short scale p bass for sale on my local fb group atm. I'm told ss is good for guitarists who want to occasionally lay down a bass track without having to grow gadget arms.

If you go short scale on the basis of familiarity of scale length then the Ibanez Talman is a complete bargain at less than £150.

  • I've a superb P bass that I'd be happy to let go very cheap if you were based anywhere near me (Gloucestershire or Worcestershire?)

  • Ibanez Talman. I have the short scale one. Ivory finish. Beautiful in terms of sound, action, looks. Very heavy headstock, so: bad balance! But one doesn't notice that when playing, even with a nylon strap. You do need a special stand, though, due to body shape.

The Yamaha budget line basses are nice, too.

I've had an Indonesian Squier P-Bass Special since 1999, for the odd jam, covers gig and guitar weekend.  It's a P body, J neck and has one of each pickups.  IIRC it has a volume knob for each pickup too.

    I ain't selling, :P but it's a good two-in-one.

    Context is everything.

Is this hypothetical bass guitar going to be used for laying down rough guide bass lines in home demo recordings or is there any possibility that the recorded part could survive into the completed project?

If the bass guitar is going to be recorded fairly early in your overdubbing process, it would be a good idea to choose a sound that will not clash with later overdubbed instruments. As a sweeping generalisation, that sound is a Precision Bass with flatwound strings. (Second choice, Rickenbacker 4001/4003 neck position pickup.)

    Be seeing you.

I used a Squire P Bass for years .. great instrument. I stupidly sold it.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!
