Just one? Impossible to choose. Old-style classic vs modern features?

Most of the classics are monotimbral with no velocity sensing, and that wouldn't suit me.

Hmmm ... maybe a Matrix 12 ... but that means no ROMpler tones to quickly dial-up! If I really was stuck with just one synth, it would be the Fantom G.

Silly Interweb forum question but I'll play anyway.

In the proverbial "which one would you rescue from your burning home" scenario, it would be my Roland JD-990 with SR-JV80-04 Vintage Synth expansion board.

Fortunately, the JD lives in a trolley rack with several other synthesizer modules. Thus, it would be quicker to push the whole trolley than to unscrew one module.
    Be seeing you.

I couldn't exactly state my favourite as I don't have a lot to do with synth models, but I recall going to the London Music Fair - probably back in the 80s??? - and I was blown away by the Korg M1. At the time it was out of this world, I couldn't believe the beauty of the sounds. Every one seemed to inspire something different.

Couldn't afford the bloody thing though!

  • Right, if we’re playing a “which would you have if money were no object” I’d want an Oberheim OB-Xa.

As a non-keyboard player then I'd have to say a Mini Moog - the sound of so many great 70s records.

Many of the great Seventies mono synth sounds that, as a kid, I assumed to be Minimoog turned out to be ARP Odyssey. :)

Juno 106 is all over some of my favourite records, so is the MS20 and 303.

Thanks. I've heard of them. Bet Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman had both. Greedy beggars!

Yamaha DX7.  Never owned one but all the famous bands had one and I lusted after it like a fat man with £4.90 outside an "All you can eat for £4.99" restaurant.
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.
Also chips are "Plant-based" no matter how you cook them.

  • I’d also still love a Juno. Probably a 106 for the midi, because im cack-handed.

Yamaha CS-80 was what Vangelis used all over the Blade Runner OST. Just saying....

    I'll throw in a semi-serious suggestion - Casio PX5-S

Light enough to carry in a bag on one shoulder, good weighted keyboard with 88 keys, hex layer synth voices can do a surprising amount, sounds good and cuts through in a live mix, then there's huge flexibility in the splitting / layering options, plus the configurable controller sliders / knobs.

If I could only have one, and that could be 'anything' I'd probably buy something more expensive to be honest, but the bang for buck is really high with the px5s, and it covers a hell of a lot of ground. I think it will be regarded as an under the radar classic in future years

I've got an original MS-20. What songs did you like?
