The new Ed O'Brien Strat

What's Hot
I've been offered a preorder of the new EOB Strat. Shop is after £899 (reckoning they'll retail for £949ish when they land). Seems like a lot to me, especially for a Mexican strat, even though this one is pretty heavily modded from normal.  What do you people think. enat will these end up selling for.

Tbh, I shall have to google Ed O Brien. But, moving onto your Mexican Fender vs price issue you'll see more of this in the near future. Brad Paisleys Tele is somewhat expensive by Mexican standards from what I've seen. Just be glad it doesn't say "made in US" on it otherwise you'd be paying £1600 for a guitar made by the same Mexicans ;)

If you like the looks and the spec of the guitar then go for it :)

I saw a demo where they stated the price in dollars will be $1099. Not sure what that will run to in Sterling.

They also confirmed the EOB is not limited run.

The spec looks really interesting, it has a powered sustainer pickup in the neck with on / off switching plus a high / low / blend switch for feedback tone. The 2nd tone control position controls the sustain level.

Similar to the Jonny Marr in that the player has specified the fit out.

  • Yep they look great. 10/56 V neck profile too.

True story. Back in the day, early 2000s, I was on an internet forum called seethru.co.uk, which was like a "real life" version of the web portal being worked on by the cast of Attachments. Anyway, one day someone posted a link to a dodgy download of Amnesiac. I proceeded to download the album over 64k, took a day or so.

The next day, I got an email asking me if I would share the URL, so I did. A couple of days later, the offending website, where the download was offered, vanished. Of course the email was from a guy named Ed. It took me a while to twig that it could have been Radio-Ed himself.

I actually went on to buy the cloth-bound book version of Amnesiac, but obviously I understand why the site went etc. Funnily enough it wasn't long before Radiohead were offering an album download for whatever the downloader wanted to pay. I can't remember which one that was, but I paid £5.

@fields5069 In Rainbows. I think I paid a fiver or so as well.

As for the EO'B Strat, I think it looks awesome. It's not a classic rock/blues guitar - it's entirely meant to be for making strange noises with fuzz pedals and delays and loops. I'd love one.

And considering adding a sustainer to a regular Strat would cost you well north of £200 I don't think it's overpriced

  • The TVL MIM Jazzmaster was 1050 3 years ago or whenever I bought it, so Theres loads of Mexican Fenders that cost a lot

Look up the cost of a Sustainer System.

Then look up the cost of a roughly equivalent Mex Strat.

    Now factor in fitting costs.

    Its not unreasonable, imho.

As for the guitar, I’m very interested - most sustainer guitars are a bit too rawk or metahhhl for me, so this is of great interest.

If it's a proper 10/56 V profile on a MIM Strat, that's very appealing in itself, never mind the pickups and other goodies.

I can't put my finger on the reason why but signature guitars really don't do it for me - I would never buy one.

Having owned one of those Teles... I’m more interested in the Ed Strat. There’s a reason few folks bought them, as they are neither Arthur nor Martha. All the ‘magic’ is in Jonny, not that guitar... believe me!

Nothing to do with Greenwood, but I really wanted one of those Tele Plus models when they first came out.  I had a late-'80s Fender catalogue and I loved the look of it with the two Lace sensors in the bridge.  Never actually saw one to try, though.  I did buy a Strat Plus Deluxe which was in the same catalogue.

I'd never buy one because it was a sig, even if I liked the artist - and having a conspicuous actual signature on it would be a real turn off.

But if it was an interesting instrument in its own right that just happened to be a sig (which is the case here IMO), I'd take a look.

Despite not really having any opinion on Troy Van Leeuwen, I own a Yamaha SA503TVL which I love - because it's a quirky design with its own character (as well as being typically well-built for a Yamaha).
I'd rather have a Jonny Greenwood signature Tele
And a Fender 85 plus a shitload of crazy FX
