well the last two have gone down well and I have enjoyed doing them.

the local shop told me quite directly I should do nothing else except replicate the Earth 2 ‘52 over and over again.

That’s just not the way I do things.  I want to build different things... but I think I want to keep an LP in the go at the same time.

so, I scratched my 52 itch and it’s time for something different.

the 3 top runners are, in no particular order:

*a 54 wrap-tail in oxblood with P-90’s.
*a 55 custom in whatever colour you want, as long as it’s black.. likely with dynasonics again, that worked well
*a 59 burst with a different pickup choice... not cherry, hand rubbed antique style

obviously whatever I do, it won’t be an authentic replica

Lets see what happens

I vote 54 or 55/56 custom, customs are so good looking

mind you can't go wrong with a wraptail, hey make both

what about a Jeff beck style with pafs, I did one and really liked the look of it

burst is meh unless it's a full on aged replica then it's lovely lol

Imagine a custom with a dynasonic/p-90 combo and aged gold trapeze tailpiece. It would be a nice follow on to the 52, still in the spirit of that build.

I am almost sold on it, but the binding puts me off, and defines the style :?

Assuming it gets to you okay, I don’t think you have much else to fear. TTony said:

I am going to let the wood guide the finish on this, because I went out of the way to ignore it on the last.

i have ordered another lightly figured sycamore top and if it looks anything like the last one it’s not getting covered this time.  It’s like a roll of the dice to decide what I do.

you've got to bind a custom if it's a dark colour but not so much on a burst imo

I don’t mind binding, I can do the custom style.  I just don’t enjoy it and don’t like it when it’s in the back edge of a guitar....

i did a PRS shaped custom hybrid with multiply binding about 8 years ago.  The sharper curves were a challenge but worked okay.  Fairly sure I could do better on the simpler shape with the extra years experience

Does a custom work if it’s not double bound?

what colour are you doing the whole guitar?

I did standard binding on a black top dark cherry back, that worked great
Not sure if you do it all the same colour though

  • Hmmm that thinline custom looks rather fetching as does the oxblood. My money would be on one of those two.

first 2 would get my vote, a solid custom too like a 56

Slap a bigsby on the third please, not fussed about the burst, it's nice but different would be better, like a p90 burst or gold foil etc

Stick a stop tailpiece and a bridge humbucker on the third one down and you've a dead ringer for Jan Ackerman,' Moving Waves era LP

how are they any more different than the mini-hums i added to the mockup?   i was considering a gold foil in P90 cover for one of these

it doesn't look different  enough for me, I think a wraptail version would be great

I'm also a bit bored of bursts so ignore me completely

The one that really caught my attention was the f hole custom, I'd really fancy building one of them now with goldfoils maybe

    I'll enjoy watching this though

Yeah, i know what your saying.  It will all depend on the wood

I threw the F-hole in for a bit of fun, but it does look great... quite a bit more work in it though

Agreed, I changed my mind from a goldtop to a burst because of a top, it'll look great as an aged dirty faded lemon burst, I've never had a top like that before, it's really wild
