Matamp

What's Hot
So as well as making pickups I design amps at Matamp.....

About 90% of our amps overseas to the kind of player who needs a minimum of 100w all of the time!

A few years back we made some low wattage amps, we are thinking about relaunching a lower wattage line and also a combo or two.

I’ll try and keep you updated with progress on this thread if it’s of interest?

  • I thought you had the 20watters in the range already? I can see why the usual audience for Matamps might shun them right enough :)

My favourite of the Mats I had was a series 2000, a very sweet sounding amp for clean through overdrive.

  • Yeah - no combos though. The GT20 isn’t that popular in a head which is a shame!

I did that as a pedal platform amp. Anybody remember Nick Jennison from Intermusic forum days?

  • I'd like to see Matamp make a low powered 6L6GC Djent machine, with a built in noise gate and a special switch designed for guitars with 8/9/10/11 strings....  (Sorry, I couldn't resist for the small joke)

Yeah @Van_Hayden please keep us posted if you relaunch a lower wattage line.

    They do. The off switch.

King St MkII by any chance?

Combo sound interesting, replace my old VC30 for me.

MATAMP means Hi-fi to me and Stoner Rock is Hawkwind, not overbearing sludge.

    @lustycourtier wins the forum today...

@blobb along the lines of the King St, although I could personally use a 40w ish combo with verb and possibly the bias modulating trem from the GT20.

@earwighoney most of our customers downtime to Hades anyway....

a guitarist (pro, not bedroom) i really like swears by matamps. he went from marshall to orange to matamp and has decided they are his amp for life, so i've always been curious about them. he's more classic hotblooded brit rock whereas i'm vampirish postpunk/goth, so not sure if our demands overlap (distortion fx loops so on), but they are certainly a brand i'm interested in.

as for thoughts, if you are up for suggestions, i think something along the same lines as the little Blackstar HT combo amps (5w and under) would be useful. a one-stop-shop pocket rocket.
the BS are small and quiet enough to play in a bedsit etc and still sound valvey. the new reality for most young (sub 30) guitarists is that they will spend most of their 20s/30s living in small sutdios/bedists/flats/shared houses, so amp companies with an eye to the future need to really focus on that setting. BS worked that out quick.
the BS also have DI, emulated out/speaker sim, headphone jack. simple contemporary innovations that make it an ideal all-in-one for those same forced out of the air and onto daw for writing/recording/practising.

where the BS fall down, to my ears, is that they seem to have a very compressed and tense tone, if that means anything to you? they never quite sound big or fill space, even through a PA. US flavoured tone stack maybe? i think they were thinking about Mesas.

Orange explored this same ground with their micro terrors, they sold well but i think the novelty wore off quick for many as the tone lacked something. i wasn't convinced.

maybe that area is now oversubscribed, or the concept or price point are not where matamp feels its interests are best placed. but speaking personally, i'm in the prcocess of selling a big brit combo and downsizing for bedroom and daw, so that's where my head is at re future plans. i don't see myself buying another big amp. i'm late 30s, lowish income, small place. so typical of the scenario i stated.

but definitely feedback on developments because it's a brand which inspires interest and affection.
i am the hired assassin... the specialist. i introduce myself to you... i'm a sadist.

I've been hassling matamp to bring back the miniverb - it was a stunning unit and the only reason I didn't get one when they where out was the hassle/pain one of the dealers/order agents caused me to the point where I couldn't be bothered ordering.

That cranked miniverb with a real non-digital reverb was a magic little amp head. I'll buy one tomorrow if you bring it back

  • Yeah - I think we sold 5.....certainly less than 10. You had to be so careful with lead dress inside to avoid hum they were a monumental pain in the backside! I now know why everyone uses digital verb in that kind of amp now..

  • I would love to see a mini-Matamp head, like the size of Dual Terror but Matamp style. Simple, elegant and goes from good cleans to the kinda nice break up rock tones...I personally don't use lots of gain but if I did I would just use a pedal.

I also think you guys should try your hand at the high wattage small bass amp world.

  • I'd like that too - a great 30w head. I may be on my own but I'm more interested in a truly great sounding amp than loads of features.

I've always fancied a Matamp but I've struggled to pick out which amp would suit me best. I'll watch with much interest :)

I'd be ALL OVER a 50w Matamp GT1 in a small lighter enclosure (if possible)? Like say just a tiny tiny bit larger than the Victory Kraken?

I'm guessing this is not possible...

I should have hung on to my 1224mk2 - it covered most of my amp needs, sold it to fund self builds (5E3, 18watt TMB, SE5 watt). If a used one came up at the right price I'd be very tempted.

  • I love my (much modified) Kingstreet, but now I'm more frequently using a Vox AC4TV, mainly because it's very portable, and not as precious. Playing it so often has made me reconsider what I'm looking for in an amp.

So now my ideal (And it would be a Matamp, no other compares..) 5-10W, with Gain, 2 band EQ, Master Level and a spring reverb, a 10" speaker with an extension speaker output. Always set to a mild overdrive, clean it up with the guitar volume, or crank it up using a boost.

That would definitely be an easier amp to wire than my Kingstreet, don't you reckon @Van_Hayden ?
Lots of Nice Guitars, and not enough pedals!

please bring it back - make the head a little bigger if you need to, a little bigger head to keep that true great little reverb and quality cranked sound would be amazing, I push the poor guys at Matamp every time I have a minor communication with them as there really is / was nothing like it (also I'll buy a second hand one right now if one ever turns up in the office!!)
