We used to do a version of Bryan Ferry's "Let's Stick Together" which I had always assumed was a sort of cover of Canned Heat's "Let's Work Together" with different lyrics.

I've recently discovered that they are both covers of originals by Wilbert Harrison, the original "Let's Stick Together" is remarkably similar to Ferry's - it's terrific in fact.

Harrison redid the song in the 70's as "Let's work Together" and that was the song covered by Canned Heat.

I got very confused by that when watching an old episode of (ahem) game show Don't Forget The Lyrics with Shane Richie.

I thought I knew the Ferry song - but it turned out I actually know the Canned Heat one.  When the lyrics came up on the screen I was totally befuddled.  I think the contestant on the show had the same reaction.

I’d made the same assumption and didn’t know all that. Harrison I knew of because he made, possibly, the definitive version of Kansas City.

  • to recreate the element of surprise, get out of screen-sight and ask someone to click the play button so you can't see the song title.

i first heard it on an unlabelled compilation tape someone made me. way too young to remember the original (1970s song) so took it at face value.

You may be too young to remember the original but I remember it very well :)
One day I'm going to make a guitar out of butter to experience just how well it actually plays.

4 pages and no-one's mentioned this.

Technically the "original" in as much as the songwriters are performing it, but not actually the first recording. The earliest was in about 1993 and was a re-worked version in Danish, with a structure much more akin to Natalie Imbruglia's version.

    Loads! Haha..

    Sail by Devildriver (covering awolnation)
Wasted years by Devildriver (Covering Maiden)
Black soul Choir by Devildriver (Hall n Oates?)

Gouge Away by Papa Roach. (Pixies cover).

Another Brick in the Wall - Korn

Whiskey in the Jar - Tallica

    etc.

Mostly what I heard when I got into rock and metal at around 15 or so, I just presumed was original songs!

Years later I then found out.

I was surprised by the later devildriver discoveries though, as all 3 tracks sound fantastic as metal songs, and would never have suspected 2/3 to be covers of totally different artists.

There was some gap between me hearing 'Combine Harvester' and 'Brand New Key'. I think I heard BNK in the 90's and assumed she was doing a quirky cover - I got that the wrong way round.

    You're All I've Got Tonight.

First version I heard (and loved) was by the Smashing Pumpkins.

Only realized after that it was by The Cars.

Just having an 80's themed trawl of Youtube and found out that 'C'est la Vie' isn't an original by Robbie Nevil (it's the better version though).

Hurt, by Johnny Cash. I know, that's an embarrassing one.

That song that Gary Jules did for Donnie Darko. Turns out it was some crap 80's band called Tears for Fears who wrote it. Before my time.  ;)
It's because of opinions like these that we need the facepalm button back.
    And this one:

(Mind you, Queen then ripped off Stairway for Bohemian Rhapsody.)

I think everyone knows that Kanye West uses Ray Charles' 'I Got A Woman' in 'Gold Digger' but I didn't realise Ray had pretty much nicked the song himself.

I read on some music forum of a Metallica fan arguing that "Whiskey in the Jar" was written by Metallica!  A young lad I guess, more to be laughed at than pitied...
As I've understood it the Thin Lizzy version was heavily rewritten to from the traditional version so when folk musicians do it now they tend to base it on the Lizzy one rather than the traditional one. That sound correct?

You are right @EricTheWeary.  I can't say how the traditional version was sung as everyone sings and plays it as per the Lizzie version these days. Even playing campfire chords, it is a fun song to play as everyone knows most of the lyrics..
If I'm doing the original version, I have to 'think' of it sung in an Irish accent. Fortunately, I'm not so stupid as to put on a faux Irish accent when I sing it - but I still have to think 'Dubliners' or the Thin Lizzy version get another airing.

  • This one is a 'I didn't know it was a cover of a cover'.

Nirvana's Where did you sleep last night. I thought it was their interpretation of the Leadbelly version of the folk song. But listened to Mark Lanegan's first album recently which has a version of the song on it, with Kurt Cobain on guitar. The arrangement and Lanegan's vocals very obviously influenced the Unplugged version. So it's more like Cobain's cover of his and Lanegan's cover, if you know what I'm saying!?

I don't think I mentioned this one before but I was listening to Private Lives by Grace Jones this morning. I know it's a cover of the Pretenders but for many years I certainly didn't.

Mah-Na Mah-Na wasn't originally recorded by the Muppets.

It was originally used in the soundtrack to a Swedish film called Heaven and Hell... and used in the background of a scene about Saunas. Yes, indeed.
