  • I've never understood genres and, with the proliferation of ever more niche categorisations these days, the situation just seems farcical to me - just write some music.

Great idea for the next theme: "Just Write Some Music

  • There was a band a few years ago that combined metal and flamenco, and even had flamenco dancers in full garb on stage.  They were calling it "flametal" and may have been using that as a band name, I don't remember but the few clips of video from live shows verified that they were indeed combining the two genres.  It didn't catch on.

I think it was OK when we had classical, jazz, folk, easy listening, pop, rock, rock n' roll, blues, reggae, soul, electronic and world music. It started going wrong in the late 1960's with funk, psychedelic rock, folk rock, jazz rock, blues rock, ska,  rock steady, punk rock, hard rock, pub rock, post-rock, heavy metal, hardcore, thrash metal, indie, Brit pop, ambient ..... it's now totally out of hand ...  hip-hop, techno, grime, jungle, post-jungle, Detroit sound, tech house, UK bass, urban, west coast urban, EDM etc, etc ....

As you say .. just make music.

Metal, I think, has become the worst offender.  I used to joke it was all Metalcore, Grindcore, bloody Applecore ... and now there are at least 3 sub genres of grindcore, which is a sub genre of metalcore which is ... blah blah blah.

Maybe I'm just getting old :)

So I suppose, I would be in the spirit of the task writing a War Metal track and subverting it to be a Viking Metal track ....

Daft thing is, I really do consider myself a fan of metal, and I'm pretty sure I'd struggle to pick out some of these in a line up.  Except for Drone Metal ... that one stands out, God bless Sunn O)))!

To be honest, you'd be in the spirit of the task if you write anything :) We just want to get more people involved. You might get more votes if there's some link to the theme, but that's not guaranteed.

I find having some sort of theme helps me produce something, even if it were something weird like "write music for cows". Which is probably a cue for jokes about moo-sic.

    It's not a competition.

  • Before all the metal genre overloads a comedy duo, "McLean and  McLean"  did a spoof on rock genres based on "shock rock" , "soft rock" etc..., they included "Speech Impediment Rock" citing songs like BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" and Elton Johns "Benny and the Jets".

  • How about Zappa plays the Bay City Rollers? but then there's copyright issues. Everything i think up has copyright issues....... except perhaps Christmas hymns, but that was last months challenge.

I received an entry in the early hours of this morning form someone called Paul (I won't give your full name on the forum). Am I correct in guessing that it's from you @DeeplyDazzled ?

Oops: I should point out that you have the right to remain anonymous. Email me if that's the case.

btw. you get a point if you also submit a picture, but it's entirely your choice.

See extract below from the first post in the thread.

"Picture: In addition to the music, try to create your own picture that relates to your interpretation of the theme. This isn't mandatory but, as a small incentive, those that provide a picture will be awarded a free point to add to their voting score. Note the picture can be anything from a hand drawn sketch, photo, photo edit or something generated in a graphics package"

You may ask, why do we have a picture? Here's my somewhat dodgy reasoning

    1) It adds to the fun
    2) Tradition: Antique_guitars, who previously ran this challenge, asked for a picture to accompany the music
    3) It's nice to package the music with some form of artwork. I remember album sleeves from my youth, which were part of the experience. Even modern digital music is packaged with some sort of artwork.
    4) I like making pictures.

    It's not a competition.

  • Good I've got two so far.

Remember, the submission deadline is Midnight 28 February 2018 and I'll post the entries for voting shortly after that.

When you send them, please include your forum name in the email, as I don't possess psychic powers :)
Having said that, I've manage to figure out who sent today's entry.

    It's not a competition.

    ...Teutonic Metal....?
Never heard that in my life. That I’m aware of. Heard plenty of Pentatonic Metal in my time.

OK, I've submitted something ... I only had a couple of hours today so it had to be a cover, just a f***ed up cover ...if it breaks the rules, no worries, don't include me this month and I'll do something proper for the next run once my panto duties are over!
