  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

It was a Les Paul Replica, I don't recall the make, it was awful, neck was huge, the strings sat way to high from the frets. I got it late 90s I think, cost me a grand total of a £100, I knew nothing of guitars back then and I'm glad I let it go!

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

    My Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?

Early Maverick Superstrat, possibly late 90s early 00s.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?

Friedman Double J-100 Head and matching cab!

5: What strings do you use?

    Currently Jim Dunlop medium 10s

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

I'd name the original mix same as the final song! Hundreds of mixes and I can't find the original mix to tweek them! Lesson learnt the hard way!!

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

Hauling gear out the way and soundcheck

    8: ...And five minutes after?

    Packing up the gear!

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

i'll get back to you on that one!

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

pick the guitar up earlier and work harder at it!

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
I had four guitars when I was a snotty kid..today I can't justify buying even the worse of them, let alone the others..I know which was the fourth (Epi Scroll), but can't remember the order of the other 3 (LP, Strat, Tele). My advise to parents with too much money - do NOT buy your kid anything decent, chances are he turns out like me and doesn't appreciate it.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
    Yamaha SG 2000

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    Framus Camping

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
I'm currently in a Telecaster mood, so a Paisley, or a Nashville, or an Aerodyne, or a Modern Player..in fact any Tele that isn't S-S

5: What strings do you use?
that varies a lot, I try to think that Elixir are pretty good, but not really sure..I have no problems with Slinky either..

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
There are a couple of casettes lost in time, not sure there was anything worth preserving there..

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
    I can't remember...that was like almost 40 years ago

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    see 7

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
    see 7

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

A horrible Woolworths ''axe'' in black with an action higher than an in prime Jim Morrison. cadged it off a mate circa 1999. Wish I still owned it for nostalgic reasons but the shredding of wrist tendons from trying to get a solid sounding b# out of it is the stuff of nightmares.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

my 1994(ish) (I think) telecaster plus in translucent grey burst. its been in more scrapes than a west ham fan away to Chelsea in the 80s but I love her unconditionally.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?

1976 Strat hard tail. big headstock job properly road worn on stages and rehearsal rooms not a luthier's bench, battered to death aesthetically but plays like butter and sustains for ever.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?

Christ knows. I'm currently waiting on a used mission engineering re-wah pro coming. will be nice to acquire that...if it ever arrives from the Ukraine or where ever its coming from.

5: What strings do you use?

Ernie balls - the ones in the pink packet.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

I wrote what I think is a masterpiece of delay drenched interlude on a song with a band I played in years ago. it was my crowning moment but the bastard engineer lost it in the mix to favour a shredding solo from my fellow band member.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

smoking or drinking or any mixture and ratio of the above.

    8: ...And five minutes after?

Signing autographs and snorting substances from groupies arse cracks...nah, packing the gear away as we have the laziest drummer imaginable.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

did a Pete Townshend style scissor jump off the kick drum landing on the edge of my pedal board and hyper extending my knee. que, three weeks off work and untold agony fit for Satan's personal collection.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

don't waste your money. that 450 quid piece of gear wont make you sound better!

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
I was gifted an old acoustic to learn on from a family friend, not sure of the brand,  in summer 2002...Upgraded to...an Encore Strat that Christmas!

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
My 50th Anniversary Standard Strat (the 2 tone burst with the '54 pups).

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
The above Strat, having been made in 2004 (I'm not the first owner!)

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
I'm not sure actually...I'm pretty happy with my hoard for what I play. I wouldn't rule out a slightly bigger amp if I wind up gigging anytime soon (Vox AC15C1 or Marshall DSL40C appeal to me as well priced workhorses that I'd be happy with) and GAS is always a thing (bit of an itch for sonic blue and rosewood, but nothing compelling me to buy). I'm probably holding out in case of something special.

5: What strings do you use?
Kinda in between at the moment. My Strat and Tele are moving onto Rotosound Pure Nickel 9s at the next string change. They're currently on Ernie Ball classic 9s - I'd used regular super slinkies before. My pair of Les Pauls I'm still find the balance with...they were natively on 46-9, I've tried dropping to regular 9s, now going to try 10s.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
I'd probably record something more recently than 13 years ago!

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Not gigged for a good while...watching other bands usually.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Grabbing a drink and watching the next band.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Band mate picked an argument with an ex-girlfriend in the audience. She won convincingly. He kept going back and kept having his arse handed to him.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Get a good teacher! The sooner the better.

Apologies if this thread is superseded, but it looked like fun.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
    A Kay classical - £12.00 from a secondhand shop. Probably 1981.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
    Warmoth candy red Tele

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
Hagstrom HIIN c. 1974. In pieces and incomplete.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
A neck for my current build.

5: What strings do you use?
Usually Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky (9-46).

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
    Can't go back.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
    Alcohol.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    See above.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Plenty of cock-ups and foolishness, but I wouldn't change any of that - worst thing really is just being under-prepared and a bit crap.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Stop being such a **** and get on with it. Some things never change.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

Cheapo no name acoustic with an action like a cheesegrater and fret ends that shredded your fingers. Christmas '68 after I'd seen Jimi Hendrix on the telly and pestered my Dad for about two years.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

    Probably my classical.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?

Now probably a custom made classical that I had built around 1990. I've had older stuff in the past. (Obviously, I've been playing since '68!)

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?

None really. Haven't bought anything new for years.

5: What strings do you use?

    D'Addarios on everything.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

    Leave singing to singerists.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

    Dunno, probably reading.

    8: ...And five minutes after?

    Basking in misplaced self adulation.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

Knocking my pint over. I bought a pint glass holder after that.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

It's not about guitar, it's about music. Took me a long time to learn that.

This is absurd.  You don’t know what you’re talking about.  It warrants combat.

    1. What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

An EKO accoustic which I bought when I was 13, I think.  I still have it.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

    See above.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?

    See above (this is easy).

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?

I suppose I'll have to get a "proper" tube preamp fairly soon.

5: What strings do you use?

Don't much care about the make, though I do like the cobalt strings I've just bought.  Since I damaged my left hand about five years ago I've gone down to using 8's, most folk go lighter as they get older anyway.  I was amazed to read recently that Pete Townshend always used 13's but now has 11's on his electrics.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

My singing - even worse than my guitar playing.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

It's quite a while since I did so I can't remember - probably still tuning up.

    8: ...And five minutes after?

Tearing down.  Either that or trying to extract money from the pub landlord.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

We played an open air gig in the pouring rain once where the organiser had rigged up a sort of tent arrangement for the band ("Trust me, it'll be fine...")  Towards the end of the set we noticed that a huge puddle was forming on the roof, we all looked at each other and then at all the electrical equipment and all hell broke loose.  We had just got everything back in the van when the roof gave way under the weight and we all got soaked but it could have been a lot worse.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Learn to play the piano instead.  Seriously, I think I would have been a better keyboard player...

Oooh.  Can I play, as I pop my first ale of the day...

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

September 1986.  My 16th birthday.  Hohner dreadnought acoustic my mum finally capitulated and bought me for my birthday after what felt like a decade of pestering.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Oh gawd.  Probably have to be my daughter's left handed burgundy mist jazzmaster.  Rare as rocking horse sh*t and she adores it.  If my own, my modded TVL jazzmaster.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    1976 Yamaha SG2000.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
    A 12 string Rickenbacker 360.

5: What strings do you use?
Whatever.  Got a good deal on multipacks of Gibson 10-46s on Amazon, so using them at the moment.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Never recorded.  Still too diffident about my playing to make the leap.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Only ever gigged about 3 times, 27 years ago...  Besides sh*tting myself, probably snorting a line from between the breasts of a Penthouse Pet.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    See 7.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
    Going on.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
    Relax.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Yamaha FG180 acoustic from Maxwell's in Woking on my 21st birthday, 1975. Wish I still had it.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Impossible to answer this; I'd probably die choosing.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    1967 Fender Telecaster.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
I covet a 25-50 Les Paul or an Artisan, but more realistically those Epi Koa LPs look nice.

5: What strings do you use?
Cheap ones since being made redundant at end of 2014. 10 gauge on Strat/Tele, 11 on other electrics, 12 on acoustic.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Live drummer instead of drum machine.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Keeping an eye on my gear. Making sure all is as it should be.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    Putting it all away.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Hmmm...in my 1st band we were so green to start with we never even discussed how many verses etc. On our 2nd gig we were playing "Crossroads" at the 'Scratches' (3 Lions) in Farncombe (late 1970s) and I was enjoying myself so much I turned round and grinned at the drummer, while nodding my head enthusiastically in time.
He stopped. Thought I was giving him the signal to end the tune.
At the end of the set my mate Ken came up and said "Well John you all really did go different ways at the crossroads then HAHAHAHAHAAAA!"

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Never stop believing, never stop practicing. Learn the melody.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Nasty Teisco (I think) from a second hand shop in 1977 or so. Horrible thing.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Unfair question! If I had time to think, my Jap Squier HH Strat as for about 20 years it was the only axe I had, and I've not seen another like it. If I didn't have time to think, probably Washburn WI66.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
Since giving my 1970's Framus 12 string to eldest son, Jap Squier HH Strat, 1982, I think.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
    Probably a better 4 x 12 cab.

5: What strings do you use?
    D'Addario XLs, 10-46.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Make the big solo at the end even longer... ;-).

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Drink beer; joking around with bandmates; tactical wee. In that order.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    As above. Only sweatier.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Several occasions where songs totally fell apart, but actually I don't get too embarrassed by that kind of thing... so I'm going to say playing "Sex on Fire". It always goes down really well - which just makes it worse - but have now finally banished it from the set list.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
You know, if you stop avoiding all those parts that are too difficult to play, and instead actually worked at learning them, you'll end up being able to play them... Lazy sod. You'll see, forty years later, mark my words...

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
First 'proper' guitar was a BC Rich Warlock back in the late 90s. In retrospect it was a totally bizarre choice as I've never been that into metal but I remember seeing an advert in Guitarist magazine for a starter pack that had the Warlock and an amp. When we went into the shop to get it the guy in the shop upsold my dad to a pricier Warlock and ditched the amp. Probably a good idea although my first electric having a floating trem was a bit of a baptism of fire for a newbie. I don't think it was ever the same after the first string change.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
I've got a 2014 Les Paul Standard Premium Quilt in Ocean Water Perimeter. It's not my favourite guitar but it is the most unique and irreplaceable. It's got a very weird asymmetric quilt. Everything else I own I could walk into any guitar store and buy the exact same models.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
The Warlock! I still have it.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
It's been a while since I've had a Fender so I would rather like a Tele or Strat again, but I think having worked in guitar retail related things the last 7 odd years I've been a bit spoilt with what I get to play with and now I think it would have to be a custom shop.

5: What strings do you use?
    Elixirs. Till I die.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Gosh probably the album I recorded as a dissertation for uni. I'd change the fact that it was bad.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Tuning, retuning, reretuning... why do none of my guitars stay in tune.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    Feeling gutted that it's over.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
    The runs....

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Practise way way way way more. Get lessons. Learn everything you can as young as you can while you've got the time!
Full disclosure: I'm a terrible guitar player. Work for Reverb.com as their UK Marketing Director and prior to that was Head of Digital Marketing at Andertons for 6 years.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

My AVRI strat, it's the only guitar I own.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
Until recently I owned a 2011 Squier Classic Vibe 60's strat that I received as a gift and passed on as a gift just a month ago. My current strat was made in 2016, but that's not really exciting.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

I originally received a Fender Strat from my father's friend and used that for a while - but he eventually asked for it back. My first real guitar was a Fender Strat (Mexi White) my dad got me from Guitar Centre and flew home with.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

My only current guitar, Gibson Les Paul

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?

My only current guitar, Gibson Les Paul

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?

Trying to get back into the swing of things, I'd like to get a nice small tube amp for the bedroom, and start experimenting with pedals again. The one tone (great tone) Plexi has done it's job for me.

5: What strings do you use?

Legacy Pro-Tone Nickel Wound Electric Guitar Strings 9-46 -- my sweat is toxic so I need cheap strings I can change often

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

Stop trying to be lofi/punk and record something that sounds huge

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

Having a beer, checking my tuning

    8: ...And five minutes after?

Having many more beers and trying to forget the whole experience

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

Got way too drunk before a show, started a fight (sort of) in the crowd and almost got kicked out of the venue...mid set

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Try to enjoy it more, don't force yourself to learn songs, find your own voice

Use classical not steel on an intro.
7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Warming up my hands and stretching.
    8: ...And five minutes after?
Wiping the strings down and packing everything away.
9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
At an open-air gig the sun started to set. Myself and the bass player had to retune between and during each number.
10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
If it sounds good, use it. Don’t get sucked into gear trends.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Way back in July 1969, I was in the local 5 and dime.... no sorry that was Bryan Adams. Hopefully none of you pulled any muscles with the eye roll that doubtless provoked... I bought a "Axis" Strat shaped object so I could start playing with friends back in 1993 from a second hand shop, think it was £75. Black finish with a mapleish neck.nice set of rotosound steels and a penchant for wandering out of tune and snapping the B-string.. I learned a lot about fettling from that guitar shaped object.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
    1992 SRV Signature strat

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    As above

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Small Fender Valve amp to replace the HRD I sold before being lynched by my neighbours, though I am building a Strat-o-like from various bits. I will do a build thread so you can point and laugh.

5: What strings do you use?
For electric usually GHS Nickel Rockers/D'addario in .012 or .013.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
I haven't committed any of my atrocities to tape (yet).

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Despite not gigging since 1998 I seem to remember I'm usually pacing around nervously and running through the set list.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Shaking like a sh*tting dog with the adrenaline.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Rhythm guitarist downing tools mid solo because he "wasn't feeling the vibe" he was sacked using a flurry of vitriolic invective shortly after..

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Don't suddenly stop playing in 2000 and then wonder why you're still rubbish in 2015 when you start again!

     just one?

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
     1981 G&L L2000 bass

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
attempting to suppress the urge to buy new gear

5: What strings do you use?
      Ernie Ball 10-46

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
too many things to change, so little time

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
just generally checking that the gear is in order; guitars are in tune

    8: ...And five minutes after?
starting the painful post-gig loading while pretending to enjoy it ... LOL

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
tough question ... probably forgetting how to play the song ...

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
keep doing what you're doing ... and don't worry about "success"

1: Nadine Strat Copy - Black. I bought it for £50 on my 13th birthday. Terrible. Sanded the paint off and took it apart with the intention of doing something cool with it. It stayed in pieces before it was re-assembled and given to an ex some 15 years later.

2: Gordon Smith GS1.5. I had that made in 2011 and it was my main guitar for years. It's not even that great but it means a lot to me.

    3: Yamaha Nylon String.

4: Rothwell Love Squeeze Compressor (had one previously but sold it when I was broke).

    5: Telecaster: D'addario 9.5-44
    Gordon Smith:  D'addario 11-52
    Gretsch: D'addario 10-46
Yamaha Nylon String: D'addario Pro Arte hard tension
    Tanglewood Steel string: Elixir 11's
    Mandolin: Elixir 11's

    6: Fewer notes

    7: Pre-gig poop.

8: Packing up so I can talk to peeps without fear of gear bring broken / stolen.

9: String break on a Bigsby equipped guitar and I didn't bring a backup. Ended up having to play lead guitar in a loud band on an acoustic for the rest of the show. It turned out OK and I don't think I've ever been that focussed.

10: Rely on your ear from the get go, nothing else will set you in better stead.
