In terms of cool factor, it's just awesome. It'' been very well looked after indeed. It sounds lovely but damn digital is close now.

I think I might tentitively declare my fx buying done.

I always do that tentatively as well. :)

I'll probably seek out a MIDI controller in the future, but I'm also tentatively calling an end to my FX buying...unless Strymon bring out a pitch/seq/arp pedal (I'll be waiting for a long time...).

I bought one of these RE501s when they came out. At that time they were regularly used on FOH desks for big concerts as well as in bands backline. The chorus is a simple one knob effect that is astonishingly nice on guitar (but not really much use in the PA) and the tape loop is just fabulous. The reverb is just a small metal plate mounted inside on the bottom. It is worth having it serviced once in a blue moon to check it over to lube wheels and de-mag the heads. I always find the branded Roland tape loops in those plastic containers were best. Even quality tape made into loops never seemed as convenient or reliable, that first feed when you loop it round the capstan/heads and switch it on to unpack itself fully is still a moment of magic each time I do it.
Mines away being serviced ATM and I use the BOSS RE20 live on my board most of the time now, but there is something very special about the Chorus Echo.

@teentonetal P.S. Plug a mic in the front end (via a mixer to up the gain if you have one), set the speed control at its slowest, select the sound on sound head/setting and sing (in your best Freddy tone)
    Here I stand
Think I'll stay around around around around
    You won't see me.
    Now i'm here
    Etc.

I guarantee you will smile for the rest of the day.

@ESBlonde awesome! This one has come with an unopened never used roland spare tape.  I've not had a chance to use it in anger yet I have Saturday lined up for that.

The thing is immaculate though, still has the protective film on the serial badge etc.

I really was torn about buying one, upkeep, service etc but it's about the only bit of vintage gear I've ever been interested in.

Bought it from a collector. It's hardly used, never gigged and never been in a studio.

A very short clip of mode 6 direct into helix, Reverb from the 501

Things that are instantly cool - the 1 repeat feature, The chorus is beautiful.
Things are are hard - Delay mix is pre-defined, adding intensity pushes to self oscillation very quickly
Things that look interesting - Sound on Sound and stereo outs..

TBH after a quick play there is nothing here that my existing pedals can't do. Damn digital is close, if not better in many ways.
But I need a proper play through and this just oozes "mojo" for want of a better word. But it's all in my head.

@ESBlonde out of interest, who do you use to service it?

I'm lucky in that respect, my retired Brother in Law was an electrinics guy and although his hands no longer work very well his mate (who is also retired now) will do the odd private job. Many years before I found a guy across the country in Wales that specialised in them (was suggested by Roland when i contacted them), buy I can't remember his name now 20 years on.

Also, the mojo is real. Yes digital is close and certainly more portable, as I said I hav ean RE20 on my pedal board. But driving the front gain hard on the 501 used to give my clean marshal a nice sparkle for want of a better expression. You can't push digital like that!!.

I'm starting to miss mine now, need it back.

I just discovered that the Sound On Sound knob is also the delay level knob! Chuffed :)
