My 800 2204 holiday build

What's Hot

So holidays are almost over and it has not been as productive as I would have liked, but I am just about there with the small box 2204 build, here are some photo's as I go.

I am building it stock to start with and then will mod it to be something more along the lines of what I prefer for this sort of amp.

Started on the turret board - solid core wire for all the under board links installed

Underside - I don't like soldering on the underside of the board, everything is routed to the top, makes changing things about easier and also helps with fault finding

Prepping hook up wire, cut stripped and tinned, boring work but it has to be done, wires are stripped enough for a 270 degree wrap around the turret.

Hook Up wire all secured in place mechanically.

Starting to build up the board

Finished Board - I decided to use Sozo caps and F&T filter caps on this one

Underside showing wire links and flying leads, no solder connections here.

It all looks so easy - in a painting-by-numbers sense - when you see it take shape step-by-step like that!
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

it is when you know what you are doing.... until it goes wrong!

I should have said that I could never paint, not even by numbers.

Electronics are in much the same category for me, just with a little more "excitement" in the consequences!

Actually I don't enjoy following a layout paint by numbers style either, most amps I build I can do so out of my head, it is really hard work to build this exactly as drawn rather than change things to the way I know they will end up in the end.

anyway, going to do a little more work tonight, just easing my way into it....

Ok, here are a few more photo's. the amp is actually just about finished now, should have it singing on Monday.

Power switch wiring, first time I forgot to connect the pilot light, pain the the a$$, the heat shrink is to comply with design guidelines in case a cable breaks.

Heater wiring, you don't actually have to twist heater wiring as long as it is parallel it will cancel out the hum, I twisted the last two sections to keep them tight.

Board in and wiring up the standby switch

Starting to wire up the pots

Wiring up the power valve grid stoppers, making sure there is a good mechanical connection before soldering... to look like this

    getting there with it

Whenever I see your wiring it makes me want to rip my amps to bits and start again!...

    top work fella!...

Grounded to chassis at the inputs, these need to be really good connections.

Speaker outputs - I have wired up the yellow negative feeback to allow for a mod later on

Inputs wired up, not my favourite job

filter caps wired up, would have been much easier to do this before the fuse holder where installed.

Getting there, just about ready for first start up.....

Very impressed that is some inspiring work - the attention to detail is great to see!

What mods were you planning on - I'm about to try to do a 2204 build as well so very interested
