Just about everything involving Pete n' Dud, countless Reeves and Mortimer sketches (Corbussier et Papin)...

and then this above everything else.

Bottom: kicking the gas meter reader and whacking him with the frying pan. The sound effects are brilliant.
Python: way too many to mention, but the argument sketch comes to mind, as does the philosophers' football match.
Spike Milligan. Very un-PC, but the Pakistani dalek sketch is genius.
There was a Reeves and Mortimer song that included the lyric "The Dutch have no conception of rust" which just floored me.

The two Ronnies and Fawlty Towers were great but as a rule I don't find English stand-up or sketch shows funny at all. Some of the sit com stuff was fantastic but almost exclusively the David Croft written shows starting with Dad's Army right through to Are you being Served? and It ain't half hot mum etc
By contrast American sit-coms are still so much sharper and funnier ....starting with Bilko through toTaxi, Frasier,Seinfeld etc.It is a different kind of humour and I guess one tends to fall into a camp either side of the Atlantic as to the preferred choice

The University Challenge scene from The Young Ones.

Preceded by Lemmy and the boys, too.  Which made it possibly the greatest television event of the 20th century.  :)

Oh, and this is in second place.   Reeves and Mortimer's take on Stars In There Eyes.   Chris Bell still makes me laugh out loud even now....

Had a slice of British comedy humor the other day.  Working with a mate doing some fencing.  Retired old school, jack of all trades village fella is hanging around, wanting a chat with the lads in his hat.  Just as he lights his pipe a few times with a few relaxed puffs I attempt to pick up a concrete fence post from ground level, rather than tilting it and not bending down so much.  My back starts to give so I instinctively roll backwards and end up with the post on my stomach like some sort of capsized turtle.

Old chap continues to take a few relaxed moderated puffs and says to my mate, who has his back turned from me, in a completely nonchalant tone 'Ere, your mate....long pause...he's on the floor'.  Where upon mate turns around and see me rolling back and forth on my back with a huge grin and a thumbs up with a fence post on my guts.  It's the sort of humor doesn't happen anywhere else.

  • Not really a sketch but as I used to work in a bearing’s warehouse when I was a teenager I loved the Two Ronnies with ( to the best of my memory):

“This next sketch is set in a ball bearing factory . I play a man who’s lost his bearings.”
“And I play a man who’s lost his way around.”

Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.
