The two Ronnies and Fawlty Towers were great but as a rule I don't find English stand-up or sketch shows funny at all. Some of the sit com stuff was fantastic but almost exclusively the David Croft written shows starting with Dad's Army right through to Are you being Served? and It ain't half hot mum etc
By contrast American sit-coms are still so much sharper and funnier ....starting with Bilko through toTaxi, Frasier,Seinfeld etc.It is a different kind of humour and I guess one tends to fall into a camp either side of the Atlantic as to the preferred choice

There's so much abject shit in US sitcom history. I would start with viewing a young Tom Hanks in Bosom Buddies. There's shit on either side of the Atlantic and this notion that the Americans are somehow more intelligent and sharper is astounding.

  • Fawlty Towers - the Germans
    Dad's Army - Don't tell him Pike
Two Ronnies - Four Candles, the sneezing vicar
Porridge - can of pineapple chunks
Tony Hancock - the radio ham
Morecambe & Wise - playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)

Dave Allen - two funeral processions racing each other to get to the churchyard first!  Just completely ridiculous :)

Harry Enfield - Cholmondley-Warner & Grayson present Association Football: 1920s Arsenal vs. 1980s Liverpool. Still by far and away the funniest comedy sketch I have ever seen.
Two Ronnies - Ronnie Barker rattling off all the different types of water served in a bar is ludicrous. The man had more flow than most rappers. Then there's the other one with Barker drinking at the bar jumbling up his words. The man was a comedy genius.
The Fast Show - Unlucky Alf falls down a hole. Completely predictable but hilarious. Then there's Jazz Club and Competitive Dad.

My fave is Morcambe and Wise: the Andre Previn sketch. Pure genius in terms of timing and humour, and Previn played his part beautifully.

Not Quite sketches but I love two IT crowd episodes:

    1) the countdown one
    2) the one with 'the internet' black box

Almost everything Ronnie Barker's ever done.

A lot of the early Harry Enfield /Paul Whitehouse/Charlie Higson stuff such as The Scousers, Ted and Ralph or the Old Gits.

Morecambe & Wise too - two that spring to mind are the stripper music breakfast sketch and the one with a young Elton John on piano.

"Musical demon, set your honey a-dreamin', Won't you play me some rag"
