  • Thanks Chris, I'm teaching someone the Blink 182 song at the moment and had no idea about the octave synth part until now. My ears really are shite

His videos are great but the one on Won't Back Down was really "what makes the arrangement and production great". It's not about song writing.

Yes I really like these videos for entertainment value but they are much less educational in theory terms than Ricks usual output which is truly stellar.

If you listened to it on you in-ear buds, you will miss a lot of the low frequency detail like synths. Even if played through a decent hi-fi system, a lowish bitrate looses a lot of this information. Which is why I find that I need to listen to the CD or a FLAC rip to fully hear and understand what the band were up to in the studio. YMMV of course.

  • If I'm honest Rocker it's via spotify on my phone out of the inbuilt speakers - it's not ideal but I'm a bit limited as its work related in a hospital with very limited equipment. It's a good point though,  I'll give it a proper listen at home

Cheers guys, I am pleased the series is going down well.  I think they are more accessible to more people than his in depth theory ones, which as @mixolyd so rightly says, are truly stellar.  Hopefully it will encourage people who are less theory oriented to find a path to greater knowledge by exploring more of Rick's "stellar" video output.

Don't worry about your ears being shite @DrCornelius , sounds to me more like equipment limitation
Glad the Blink 182 one was useful and appropriate right now, good timing is not usually one of my strong suites !

  • Cheers @spark240 , I haven't got that far yet.  It keeps popping up on my YT feed, so I am looking forward to checking it out, thanks for your recommendation, massive Lukather and Toto fan here.  I will post it on here later too, along with all the others...  :)

  • I love this stuff. All the Small Things is one of the all time classics of its era. So simple and completely brilliant (while also actually quite complex if you get into the theory).

Though it adds to my argument that people shouldn't worry about theory and worry about what sounds good. You can bet they weren't in the studio saying "let's add a flat 9 octave part and create dissonance against the guitar chords". They just came up with it as meat to beef up the choruses and it sounded good and that's the important thing.

    Steely Dan

One of the biggest hits of the 1970's by Steely Dan.

This episode on Kid Charlemagne also has it's own thread linked below, there is a post with the YT video of the making of Aja (Classic Albums documentary) in that thread, which is very interesting too, and well worth watching.

  • Oops, the Steely Dan video is now working, sorry about the https: //blah/blah/blah stuff...

    Trade secret...
That's why I post the video link below the video itself, with a space after the https: so that it doesn't register as a link properly to the forum software.  That allows anyone to access the video via the address bar, and for me to easily fix this sort of (self inflicted) problem.  Copy, paste, delete the space, and the universal balance returns to normal, SNAFU

  • Trade secret part II...

When you just see the picture instead of the video, which usually happens after someone has edited a post, and also happens if you save a draft of your own post, as I did with the Steely Dan video, then you can use copy and paste in the address bar to reconstruct the proper YT address:

Copy image address for the pic, use the 11 character ‘file identifier’ (xKIC9zbSJoE in the case of the Steely Dan video above) from the image address and paste in after after the = sign using the YT video address below.

    https: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=

(without the space obviously (as in the post above))

    Hope that makes sense ?!?

    ^^^ F**k me, so I did   o

    How did that happen !
I am prone to the odd typo or  too  two.  I even copy and pasted the web address and then deleted the - symbols, so no actual typing.
Probably  autoerrect  autocorrect.  (corrected now, anyhoo)
