Re-bevel a Pickguard - Jazzmaster tort content

I've been looking for a decent reasonably priced tort guard for a while. One of the things that makes modern pick guards look worse than older ones is that Old ones had a shallower bevel than modern ones - plus older ones are generally nicer tort. Anyway - pick up this one on eBay, it's WD Music (and came loaded with pots, jack and switches currently surplus to requirements in parts box) and looked nice enough but could be better, I thought. So I mounted a stanley blade at 30 degrees to a bit of wood and done some scraping. Went from this (eBay listing pics) -

And after some light ageing and scraping looked this -

  • Nice job, have you done something to the tort as well? It looks nicer in the after pics!

Different lighting probably, and I re-polished it, and I think having the softer transition from top to edge just makes it look better!

The change of background colour influences how we perceive the hue. More intense lighting (or flash) would explain the change in colour saturation.

@HarrySeven could probably give a whole lecture on this topic.
    Be seeing you.

  • Nice job.

I have a vintage bevel cutter for my fixed router but it just loves to take a chunk out of pickguards.

Found a picture of the original tort guard (it's had an aluminium guard for a while). The original was particularly poor -

Looks great man. The tiny bevel on those WD ones does really bug me too. Think there are a couple of US sellers on ebay who basically do this and charge double the price for them!

Yes, it’s CS. The eagle eyed amongst you might have noticed the fret markers have changed colour too, I love the look of old clay dots so I’ve helped these get the look using these - https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F361337726932

They are useful things. I used them to take the freshness off the new bevel too - drew around the age then polished off, the colour gets left in the tool marks. For a man who is anti-relic I seem to spend far too much time doing stuff like this!

  • How long have you had your CS jazzmaster fella?
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

It's a 2009, my mate bought it new in 2010, I've had it on loan about a dozen times and finally bought it from him about 6 months ago. It's a good one!

You ever notice that darker fretboards tend to end up with darker dots?

if you have the right material for your clay dots a rub of the board wig naphtha is enough to tint the dot.  Sadly it doesn’t work on most of the repros

Yip, believe the original were vulcanised fibreboard - it wood pick up the oils from the wood. These are some sort of plastic but it takes a stain.

I was trying to work out how old it was due to the aged finish.
I don't usually like fiesta red but I do like it on your jazzmaster

I use old poker chips as harvite is one of the materials reported to be used
